For the first time ever, Sinn Féin won the most votes, the previously dominant parties shrank to a fraction of their former strengths, and the government to emerge was a coalition between previously irreconcilable enemies. For these reasons, the election marks the end of an era in Irish politics. This book analyses the course of the campaign, the parties' gains and losses, and the impact of issues, especially the role of Brexit. Voting behaviour is explored in depth, with examination of the role of issues and discussion of the role of social cleavages such as class, age and education. The process by which the government was put together over a period of nearly five months is traced through in-depth interviews with participants. And six candidates who contested Election 2020 give first-hand reports of their campaigns. Michael Gallagher is Professor of Comparative Politics in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Michael Marsh is Emeritus Professor of Political Science in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Theresa Reidy is Senior Lecturer in Government at University College Cork, Ireland. 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aEurope$xPolitics and government 606 $aElections 606 $aCommunication in politics 606 $aPolitics and International Studies 606 $aEuropean Politics 606 $aElectoral Politics 606 $aPolitical Communication 606 $aGovernance and Government 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 0$aEurope$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aElections. 615 0$aCommunication in politics. 615 14$aPolitics and International Studies. 615 24$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aElectoral Politics. 615 24$aPolitical Communication. 615 24$aGovernance and Government. 676 $a324.94170824 676 $a324.9417083 702 $aGallagher$b Michael 702 $aMarsh$b Michael 702 $aReidy$b Theresa 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483220203321 996 $aHow Ireland voted 2020$92590109 997 $aUNINA
