Conclusion. 330 $aThis book explores how fin de siècle Britain and Britons displaced spatially-charged apprehensions about imperial decline, urban decay and unpoliced borders onto Jews from Eastern and Central Europe migrating westwards. The myriad of representations of the ?alien Jew? that emerged were the product of, but also a catalyst for, a decisive moment in Britain?s legal history: the fight for the 1905 Aliens Act. Drawing upon a richly diverse collection of social and political commentary, including fiction, political testimony, ethnography, travel writing, journalism and cartography, this volume traces the shifting rhetoric around alien Jews as they journeyed from the Russian Pale of Settlement to London?s East End. By employing a unique and innovative reading of both the aliens debate and racialized discourse concerned with ?the Jew?, Hannah Ewence demonstrates that ideas about ?space? and place? critically informed how migrants were viewed; an argument which remains valid in today?s world. . 606 $aGreat Britain?History 606 $aEurope?History?1492- 606 $aRussia?History 606 $aEurope, Eastern?History 606 $aImperialism 606 $aReligion and sociology 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717020 606 $aHistory of Modern Europe$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717080 606 $aRussian, Soviet, and East European History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717090 606 $aImperialism and Colonialism$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/722000 606 $aReligion and Society$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/1A8020 615 0$aGreat Britain?History. 615 0$aEurope?History?1492-. 615 0$aRussia?History. 615 0$aEurope, Eastern?History. 615 0$aImperialism. 615 0$aReligion and sociology. 615 14$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aHistory of Modern Europe. 615 24$aRussian, Soviet, and East European History. 615 24$aImperialism and Colonialism. 615 24$aReligion and Society. 676 $a941 676 $a305.892404109034 700 $aEwence$b Hannah$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01080524 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483179203321 996 $aThe Alien Jew in the British Imagination, 1881?1905$92593683 997 $aUNINA
