The debate surrounding apartheid in South Africa underwent a shift in the second half of the 20th century, with long held positive, racist European opinions of white South Africans slowly declining since decolonisation in the 1960s, and the increase in the importance of human rights in international politics. While previous studies have approached this question in the context of national histories, more or less detached from each other, this edited collection offers a broader insight into the transnational and entangled histories of Western European and South African societies. The contributors use exemplary case studies to trace the change of perception, covering a plurality of reactions in different societies and spheres: from the political and social, to the economic and cultural. At the same time, the collection emphasizes the interconnections of those reactions to what has been called the last 'overtly racist regime' (George Frederickson) of the twentieth century. 410 0$aCambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies,$x2635-1641 606 $aSocial history 606 $aEurope$xHistory 606 $aAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xHistory 606 $aImperialism 606 $aWorld history 606 $aSocial History 606 $aEuropean History 606 $aHistory of Sub-Saharan Africa 606 $aImperialism and Colonialism 606 $aWorld History, Global and Transnational History 615 0$aSocial history. 615 0$aEurope$xHistory. 615 0$aAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xHistory. 615 0$aImperialism. 615 0$aWorld history. 615 14$aSocial History. 615 24$aEuropean History. 615 24$aHistory of Sub-Saharan Africa. 615 24$aImperialism and Colonialism. 615 24$aWorld History, Global and Transnational History. 676 $a305.8009409045 676 $a305.8009409045 702 $aJustke$b Sebastian 702 $aSiegfried$b Detlef 702 $aAndresen$b Knud$f1965- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483147003321 996 $aApartheid and anti-apartheid in western europe$92854545 997 $aUNINA
