The term refers to both a character type specifically, as well as commercial genres marketed to female audiences more generally. Through its diverse chapters this edited collection introduces the two main currents of sh?jo research: on the one hand, historical investigations of Japan?s modern girl culture and its representations, informed by Japanese-studies and gender-studies concerns; on the other hand, explorations of the transcultural performativity of sh?jo as a crafted concept and affect-prone code, shaped by media studies, genre theory, and fan-culture research. While acknowledging that sh?jo has mediated multiple discourses throughout the twentieth century?discourses on Japan and its modernity, consumption and consumerism, non-hegemonic gender, and also technology?this volume shifts the focus to sh?jo mediations, stretching from media by and for actual girls, to sh?jo as media. As a result, the Japan-derived concept, while still situated, begins to offer possibilities for broader conceptualizations of girlness within the contemporary global digital mediascape. 410 0$aEast Asian Popular Culture,$x2634-5935 606 $aEthnology?Asia 606 $aCommunication 606 $aSociology 606 $aMotion pictures?Asia 606 $aAsia?Politics and government 606 $aAsian Culture$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/411040 606 $aMedia and Communication$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/412010 606 $aGender Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X35000 606 $aAsian Cinema and TV$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/413030 606 $aAsian Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911110 615 0$aEthnology?Asia. 615 0$aCommunication. 615 0$aSociology. 615 0$aMotion pictures?Asia. 615 0$aAsia?Politics and government. 615 14$aAsian Culture. 615 24$aMedia and Communication. 615 24$aGender Studies. 615 24$aAsian Cinema and TV. 615 24$aAsian Politics. 676 $a791.43652055 676 $a305.230820952 702 $aBerndt$b Jaqueline$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aNagaike$b Kazumi$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aOgi$b Fusami$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483052003321 996 $aSh?jo Across Media$92853134 997 $aUNINA
