Rethinking Italian American Ethnicity: A Middle Space. 330 $aFrom Saturday Night Fever to Jersey Shore, Italian American youth in New York City have appropriated-and been appropriated by-popular American culture. Here, Donald Tricarico investigates how Italian ethnicity has been used to fashion Guido as a distinct youth style that signals inclusion in popular American culture and, simultaneously, the making of a new ethnic subject. Emerging from a wave of Italian immigration after World War II in outer borough neighborhoods such as Bensonhurst, the story of the Guido is an Italian American story, symbolizing the negotiation of a negatively privileged ethnicity within American society. Tricarico takes up questions about the definition of Guido, the role of disco, and the identity politics of Jersey Shore in order to reconsider the significance of Guido for the study of Italian American ethnicity. 410 0$aItalian and Italian American Studies,$x2635-294X 606 $aUnited States$xHistory 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aPopular culture 606 $aEthnology$zAmerica 606 $aCulture 606 $aYouth$xSocial life and customs 606 $aRace 606 $aUS History 606 $aCultural History 606 $aPopular Culture 606 $aAmerican Culture 606 $aYouth Culture 606 $aRace and Ethnicity Studies 615 0$aUnited States$xHistory. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 0$aPopular culture. 615 0$aEthnology 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aYouth$xSocial life and customs. 615 0$aRace. 615 14$aUS History. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aPopular Culture. 615 24$aAmerican Culture. 615 24$aYouth Culture. 615 24$aRace and Ethnicity Studies. 676 $a301.4515107471 676 $a305.851073 700 $aTricarico$b Donald$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0305188 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910483013803321 996 $aGuido Culture and Italian American Youth$92843847 997 $aUNINA
