The author, Bindu Puri, argues that the debate was about more fundamental issues, such as the nature of truth and swaraj/freedom and the possibilities of untruth that Tagore saw in Gandhi?s movements for truth and freedom. Puri shows that the differences between the two men?s perspectives came from differently negotiated relationships to (and understandings of) tradition and modernity. Tagore was part of the Bengal renaissance and powerfully influenced by the idea that the Enlightenment consisted in the freedom of the individual to reason for herself. Gandhi, on the other hand, remained close to the Indian philosophical tradition which linked individual freedom to moral progress. Puri points out that Tagore cannot, however, be unreflectively assimilated to the Enlightenment project of Western modernity, for he came fairly close to Gandhi in rejecting the anthropocentricism of modernity and shared Gandhi?s belief in an enchanted cosmos. The only single-authored volume on the Tagore-Gandhi debate, this book is a welcome addition to the existing literature. 410 0$aSophia Studies in Cross-cultural Philosophy of Traditions and Cultures,$x2211-1107 ;$v9 606 $aPhilosophy 606 $aCulture?Study and teaching 606 $aEmigration and immigration 606 $aPhilosophy, general$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E00003 606 $aRegional and Cultural Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/411000 606 $aMigration$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X24000 615 0$aPhilosophy. 615 0$aCulture?Study and teaching. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration. 615 14$aPhilosophy, general. 615 24$aRegional and Cultural Studies. 615 24$aMigration. 676 $a954.035092 700 $aPuri$b Bindu$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01208340 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910482964803321 996 $aThe Tagore-Gandhi Debate on Matters of Truth and Untruth$92851749 997 $aUNINA
