The poem remained popular throughout the fourteenth century and was soon followed by two sequels. Twenty-six illuminated manuscripts constitute part of a catalogue and concordance of all Peacock manuscripts. One of the most provocative, (PML, MS G24), has twenty-two miniatures which illustrate chivalry and courtly love, as epitomized in the text. An unusually high number of scurrilous marginalia, however, surround them. An interdisciplinary exploration of iconography, reception, image-text-marginalia dynamics, and context reveals their ultimate polysemy as scatological comedians and serious harbingers of sin. 410 0$aLibrary of the written word ;$v28. 410 0$aLibrary of the written word.$pThe manuscript world ;$vv. 5. 606 $aIllumination of books and manuscripts, Medieval 606 $aMarginal illustrations 606 $aManuscripts, French$zNew York (State)$zNew York 615 0$aIllumination of books and manuscripts, Medieval. 615 0$aMarginal illustrations. 615 0$aManuscripts, French 676 $a841/.1 700 $aLeo$b Domenic$01667267 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910816799803321 996 $aImages, texts, and marginalia in a "Vows of the peacock" manuscript (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library MS G24)$94026999 997 $aUNINA
