Material incantations, in forms such as spell-inscribed amulets and stone pillars, were also central to the spiritual lives of both monks and laypeople. In centering its analysis on the Chinese material culture of these deeply embodied forms of Buddhist ritual, The Body Incantatory reveals histories of practice-and logics of practice-that have until now remained hidden. Paul Copp examines inscribed stones, urns, and other objects unearthed from anonymous tombs; spells carved into pillars near mountain temples; and manuscripts and prints from both tombs and the Dunhuang cache. Focusing on two major Buddhist spells, or dharani, and their embodiment of the incantatory logics of adornment and unction, he makes breakthrough claims about the significance of Buddhist incantation practice not only in medieval China but also in Central Asia and India. Copp's work vividly captures the diversity of Buddhist practice among medieval monks, ritual healers, and other individuals lost to history, offering a corrective to accounts that have overemphasized elite, canonical materials. 410 0$aSheng Yen series in Chinese Buddhist studies. 606 $aBuddhist incantations$xHistory 606 $aBuddhism$zChina$xRituals$xHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aBuddhist incantations$xHistory. 615 0$aBuddhism$xRituals$xHistory. 676 $a294.3/438 700 $aCopp$b Paul F.$f1965-$01030346 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910465832103321 996 $aThe body incantatory$92447191 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03089nam 2200601 a 450 001 9910480911803321 005 20170821160301.0 010 $a1-322-42082-3 010 $a1-4833-2846-5 010 $a1-4522-5140-1 035 $a(CKB)2550000001194236 035 $a(EBL)1598484 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001112314 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12355195 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001112314 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11161324 035 $a(PQKB)10942252 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1598484 035 $a(OCoLC)1007861020 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000159355 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001194236 100 $a20130912d1999 fy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aImplementing sexual harassment policy$b[electronic resource] $echallenges for the public sector workplace /$fLaura A.
