Arabs and Muslims in the Media examines this paradox and investigates the increase of sympathetic images of ?the enemy? during the War on Terror. Evelyn Alsultany explains that a new standard in racial and cultural representations emerged out of the multicultural movement of the 1990s that involves balancing a negative representation with a positive one, what she refers to as ?simplified complex representations.? This has meant that if the storyline of a TV drama or film represents an Arab or Muslim as a terrorist, then the storyline also includes a ?positive? representation of an Arab, Muslim, Arab American, or Muslim American to offset the potential stereotype. Analyzing how TV dramas such as West Wing, The Practice, 24, Threat Matrix, The Agency, Navy NCIS, and Sleeper Cell, news-reporting, and non-profit advertising have represented Arabs, Muslims, Arab Americans, and Muslim Americans during the War on Terror, this book demonstrates how more diverse representations do not in themselves solve the problem of racial stereotyping and how even seemingly positive images can produce meanings that can justify exclusion and inequality. 410 0$aCritical Cultural Communication 606 $aTelevision programs$zUnited States$xHistory$y21st century 606 $aStereotypes (Social psychology) on television 606 $aMuslims on television 606 $aArabs on television 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aTelevision programs$xHistory 615 0$aStereotypes (Social psychology) on television. 615 0$aMuslims on television. 615 0$aArabs on television. 676 $a305.6/970973 700 $aAlsultany$b Evelyn$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01033374 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910480873503321 996 $aArabs and Muslims in the Media$92451881 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03581nam 22007935 450 001 9910255233103321 005 20240322025622.0 010 $a9781137444646 010 $a1137444649 024 7 $a10.1007/978-1-137-44464-6 035 $a(CKB)3710000000731561 035 $a(EBL)4716497 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001690646 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16539079 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001690646 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)15051074 035 $a(PQKB)25078741 035 $a(DE-He213)978-1-137-44464-6 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4716497 035 $a(Perlego)3489799 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000731561 100 $a20160613d2016 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aSurvival Media $eThe Politics and Poetics of Mobility and the War in Sri Lanka /$fby S. Moving between the hip-hop of M.I.A. and Human Rights reports, satellite maps and survivor testimonies, it shows how this war in a small country is also enmeshed with critical global issues such as the effects of the war on terror, the formations of diasporic identities and the hardening politics of borders. 410 0$aMobility & Politics,$x2731-3875 606 $aLiterature$xPhilosophy 606 $aCulture$xStudy and teaching 606 $aCommunication 606 $aEmigration and immigration 606 $aPolitical science 606 $aPoetry 606 $aLiterary Theory 606 $aCultural Theory 606 $aMedia and Communication 606 $aHuman Migration 606 $aPolitical Science 606 $aPoetry and Poetics 615 0$aLiterature$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aCulture$xStudy and teaching. 615 0$aCommunication. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration. 615 0$aPolitical science. 615 0$aPoetry. 615 14$aLiterary Theory. 615 24$aCultural Theory. 615 24$aMedia and Communication. 615 24$aHuman Migration. 615 24$aPolitical Science. 615 24$aPoetry and Poetics. 676 $a302.23 700 $aPerera$b S$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01058285 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910255233103321 996 $aSurvival Media$92498746 997 $aUNINA
