It questions the existing picture of broad and rising medical prosperity across the nineteenth century to consider the men who did not keep up with professionalising trends. It unpicks the life stories of men who could not make ends meet or who could not sustain a professional persona of disinterested expertise, either because they could not overcome public accusations of misconduct or because they struggled privately with stress. In doing so it uncovers the trials of the medical marketplace and the pressures of medical masculinity. All professionalising groups risked falling short of rising expectations, but for doctors these expectations were inflected in some occupationally specific ways. 410 0$aSocial histories of medicine. 606 $aPhysicians$xhistory 606 $aHistory, 19th Century 606 $aHistory, 18th Century 606 $aMalpractice$xhistory 606 $aPhysicians$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01062841 606 $aMedicine$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01014893 606 $aMEDICAL / History$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xOsteopathy$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xHolistic Medicine$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xFamily & General Practice$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xEssays$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xAtlases$2bisacsh 606 $aMEDICAL$xAlternative Medicine$2bisacsh 606 $aHEALTH & FITNESS$xReference$2bisacsh 606 $aHEALTH & FITNESS$xHolism$2bisacsh 606 $aMedicine$zWales$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aMedicine$zEngland$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aMedicine$zWales$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aMedicine$zEngland$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aPhysicians 607 $aEngland 607 $aWales 607 $aWales$2fast 607 $aEngland$2fast 608 $aHistory. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 20$aPhysicians$xhistory. 615 20$aHistory, 19th Century. 615 20$aHistory, 18th Century. 615 10$aMalpractice$xhistory. 615 0$aPhysicians. 615 0$aMedicine. 615 0$aMEDICAL / History 615 0$aMEDICAL$xOsteopathy. 615 0$aMEDICAL$xHolistic Medicine. 615 0$aMEDICAL$xFamily & General Practice. 615 0$aMEDICAL$xEssays. 615 0$aMEDICAL$xAtlases. 615 0$aMEDICAL$xAlternative Medicine. 615 0$aHEALTH & FITNESS$xReference. 615 0$aHEALTH & FITNESS$xHolism. 615 0$aMedicine$xHistory 615 0$aMedicine$xHistory 615 0$aMedicine$xHistory 615 0$aMedicine$xHistory 615 0$aPhysicians. 676 $a610.69509034 700 $aTomkins$b Alannah$0800724 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910478942203321 996 $aMedical misadventure in an age of professionalisation, 1780?1890$92565007 997 $aUNINA
