If that is the case, the time has come for Christians not only to learn about but also from their religious neighbors. Circling the Elephant affirms that the best way to be truly open to the mystery of the infinite is to move away from defensive postures of religious isolationism and self-sufficiency and to move, in vulnerability and openness, toward the mystery of the neighbor. Employing the ancient Indian allegory of the elephant and blind(folded) men, John J. Thatamanil argues for the integration of three often-separated theological projects: theologies of religious diversity (the work of accounting for why there are so many different understandings of the elephant), comparative theology (the venture of walking over to a different side of the elephant), and constructive theology (the endeavor of re-describing the elephant in light of the other two tasks).Circling the Elephant also offers an analysis of why we have fallen short in the past. Interreligious learning has been obstructed by problematic ideas about ?religion? and ?religions,? Thatamanil argues, while also pointing out the troubling resonances between reified notions of ?religion? and ?race.? He contests these notions and offers a new theory of the religious that makes interreligious learning both possible and desirable. Christians have much to learn from their religious neighbors, even about such central features of Christian theology as Christ and the Trinity. This book envisions religious diversity as a promise, not a problem, and proposes a new theology of religious diversity that opens the door to robust interreligious learning and Christian transformation through encountering the other. 410 0$aComparative theology--thinking across traditions. 606 $aChristianity and other religions 606 $aReligious pluralism 606 $aReligions$xRelations 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aComparative theology. 610 $aTrinity. 610 $aconstructive theology. 610 $agenealogy of religion. 610 $ainterreligious dialogue. 610 $ainterreligious hospitality. 610 $atheology of religions. 615 0$aChristianity and other religions. 615 0$aReligious pluralism. 615 0$aReligions$xRelations. 676 $a261.2 700 $aThatamanil$b John J.$01055657 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910478934203321 996 $aCircling the elephant$92489225 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01053nam a2200277 i 4500 001 991002952329707536 008 160722s2012 it ab 001 0 ita 020 $a9788815240491 020 $a8815240497 035 $ab14259308-39ule_inst 040 $aDip.to di Storia, Societą e Studi sull'Uomo$bita 082 04$a981.013 082 04$a918.11043 100 1 $aLivi Bacci, Massimo$0101974 245 10$aAmazzonia :$bl'impero dell'acqua, 1500-1800 /$cMassimo Livi Bacci 260 $aBologna :$bIl mulino,$cc2012 300 $a295 p., [16] p. di tav. :$bill. ;$c21 cm. 440 0$aBiblioteca storica 651 4$aAmazzonia$xEsplorazioni$ySec. 16.-19 651 4$aAmazzonia$xPopolazione$xEffetti [della] Colonizzazione$ySec. 16.-18. 907 $a.b14259308$b08-09-16$c22-07-16 912 $a991002952329707536 945 $aLE023 981.013 LIV 1 1 $g1$i2023000144459$lle023$op$pE26.00$q-$rl$s- $t0$u0$v0$w0$x0$y.i15729485$z25-07-16 996 $aAmazzonia$91081222 997 $aUNISALENTO 998 $ale023$b26-07-16$cm$da $e-$fita$git $h0$i0
