An Abolitionism Worthy of the Name --$tcontributors --$tindex 330 $aThis volume represents the first collection of essays devoted exclusively to Jacques Derrida's Death Penalty Seminars, conducted from 1999 to 2001. The volume includes essays from a range of scholars working in philosophy, law, Francophone studies, and comparative literature, including established Derridians, activist scholars, and emerging scholars. These essays attempt to elucidate and expand upon Derrida's deconstruction of the theologico-political logic of the death penalty in order to construct a new form of abolitionism, one not rooted in the problematic logics of sovereign power. These essays provide remarkable insight into Derrida?s ethical and political projects; this volume will not only explore the implications of Derrida?s thought on capital punishment and mass incarceration, but will also help to further elucidate the philosophical groundwork for his later deconstructions of sovereign power and the human/animal divide. Because Derrida is deconstructing the logic of the death penalty, rather than the death penalty itself, his seminars will prove useful to scholars and activists opposing all forms of state sanctioned killing. In compiling this volume, our goals were twofold: first, to make a case for Derrida's continuing importance in debates on capital punishment, mass incarceration, and police brutality, and second, to construct a new, versatile abolitionism, one capable of confronting all forms the death penalty might take. 410 0$aFordham scholarship online. 606 $aPower (Social sciences) 606 $aImprisonment$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aCapital punishment$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aCapital punishment$xPhilosophy 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aCapital Punishment. 610 $aDeath Penalty Abolition. 610 $aDeath Penalty. 610 $aDeconstruction. 610 $aJacques Derrida. 610 $aMass Incarceration. 610 $aPolitical Theology. 610 $aPrison Industrial Complex. 610 $aPsychoanalysis. 610 $aSovereignty. 615 0$aPower (Social sciences) 615 0$aImprisonment$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aCapital punishment$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aCapital punishment$xPhilosophy. 676 $a364.6601 701 $aAnderson$b Nicole$0938502 701 $aChenoweth$b Katie$01028449 701 $aGuenther$b Lisa$01028450 701 $aHowells$b Christina$0966256 701 $aKamuf$b Peggy$0251640 701 $aKuiken$b Kir$01028451 701 $aMarder$b Elissa$0973924 701 $aNaas$b Michael$0689709 701 $aOliver$b Kelly$0689708 701 $aRottenberg$b Elizabeth$0992195 701 $aSaghafi$b Kas$0704713 701 $aThurschwell$b Adam$01028452 701 $aTyson$b Sarah$01028453 702 $aOliver$b Kelly$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aStraub$b Stephanie$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910478882603321 996 $aDeconstructing the Death Penalty$92444474 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03849oam 2200853I 450 001 9910790393903321 005 20220418213449.0 010 $a1-280-68281-7 010 $a9786613659750 010 $a1-136-29065-6 010 $a0-203-11431-0 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203114315 035 $a(CKB)2670000000203393 035 $a(EBL)982052 035 $a(OCoLC)804662526 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000681859 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12240948 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000681859 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10663846 035 $a(PQKB)11454942 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC982052 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL982052 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10568482 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL365975 035 $a(OCoLC)796812732 035 $a(OCoLC)773369913 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB143636 035 $a(PPN)198457820 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000203393 100 $a20180706d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aTensions of modernity $eLas Casas and his legacy in the French Enlightenment /$fDaniel R. From the war on terror to immigration, one of the major challenges facing liberalism is to understand the scope of equality in a world in which certain peoples are perceived to reject and/or violently resist democratic principles. This book revisits Europe's initial encounter with the Native Americans of the New World to shed light on how the West's initial defense of so-called 'barbarians' has influenced the way we think about diversity today, and elucidate the arguments of exclusion t 410 0$aRoutledge innovations in political theory ;$v44. 606 $aHuman rights$xPhilosophy$xHistory 606 $aEquality$xPhilosophy$xHistory 606 $aOther (Philosophy)$xHistory 606 $aCivilization, Modern$xPhilosophy 606 $aIndians, Treatment of$xPhilosophy$xHistory 606 $aIndians$xFirst contact with other peoples 606 $aDifference (Philosophy) 606 $aGenocide$xPhilosophy 606 $aEnlightenment$zFrance 615 0$aHuman rights$xPhilosophy$xHistory. 615 0$aEquality$xPhilosophy$xHistory. 615 0$aOther (Philosophy)$xHistory. 615 0$aCivilization, Modern$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aIndians, Treatment of$xPhilosophy$xHistory. 615 0$aIndians$xFirst contact with other peoples. 615 0$aDifference (Philosophy) 615 0$aGenocide$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aEnlightenment 676 $a323.101 700 $aBrunstetter$b Daniel R.$01573019 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790393903321 996 $aTensions of modernity$93848528 997 $aUNINA
