The essays range from Hellenistic Egypt to seventeenth-century Hungary and involve expulsion and migration of Jews, Muslims and Protestants. The common goal of these essays is to shed light on a certain number of issues: first, to try to understand the dynamics of expulsion, in particular its social and political causes; second, to examine how expelled communities integrate (or not) into their new host societies; and finally, to understand how the experiences of expulsion and exile are made into founding myths that establish (or attempt to establish) group identities". 410 0$aReligion and law in medieval Christian and Muslim societies ;$v5. 517 $aExpulsion and Diaspora Formation 606 $aExiles$zEurope$xHistory$yTo 1500$vCongresses 606 $aReligions$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aJewish diaspora$vCongresses 606 $aMuslim diaspora$vCongresses 606 $aCivilization, Medieval$vCongresses 606 $aChristianity and culture$xHistory$yMiddle Ages, 600-1500$vCongresses 607 $aEurope$xEmigration and immigration$xHistory$yTo 1500$vCongresses 615 0$aExiles$xHistory 615 0$aReligions$xHistory 615 0$aJewish diaspora 615 0$aMuslim diaspora 615 0$aCivilization, Medieval 615 0$aChristianity and culture$xHistory 676 $a940 702 $aTolan$b John Victor$f1959- 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910477116703321 996 $aExpulsion and Diaspora Formation$92990472 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04900nam 22006255 450 001 9910845484303321 005 20250807124750.0 010 $a3-658-43540-2 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-658-43540-0 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31230586 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31230586 035 $a(CKB)31120757400041 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31266917 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31266917 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-658-43540-0 035 $a(EXLCZ)9931120757400041 100 $a20240326d2024 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAcademics in a Century of Displacement $eThe Global History and Politics of Protecting Endangered Scholars /$fedited by Leyla Dakhli, Pascale Laborier, Frank Wolff 205 $a1st ed. 2024. 210 1$aWiesbaden :$cSpringer Fachmedien Wiesbaden :$cImprint: Springer VS,$d2024. 215 $a1 online resource (387 pages) 225 1 $aMigrationsgesellschaften,$x2569-1295 311 08$a3-658-43539-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aIntroduction -- Discovering the Endangered Scholar -- Toward Categorization -- Contemporary Challenges. 330 $a?Endangered scholars? is a recently highly relevant, yet historical notion. Embedded in the greater history of the 20th and 21st centuries, it captures the phenomenon of scholars who, after years of intellectual work and integration in their societies of origin, are forced to seek rescue in foreign host societies. The pressing urgency of the topic thus has an important historical background. From escaping Russian intellectuals after 1917 to the protection of Jewish refugees during World War II, Algerian intellectuals in contemporary history, or persecuted academics from Turkey today: Over the course of about a century, categories of inclusion, transnational relations, and forms of agency of scholars at risk remained surprisingly stable (and hence diachronously and synchronously comparable) while they also adjusted flexibly to contemporary conditions. This collective volume carves out this historical development and its recent expressions. It brings together researchers in a vivid yet largely unconnected field of migration and refugee studies. By developing a complex image of the origin of the global history and politics of protecting endangered scholars from the early 20th century until today, the book contributes to research on academics in exile as a part of refugee research, migration studies, the history of higher education, and the contemporary history of societies. The interdisciplinary volume explores the phenomenon as a historical, political and legal subject, brings together scholars of forced migration and intellectual studies, and includes currently affected scholars into those reflections.
