Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy?s attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the ?regional state? of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The author provides new insights into the political and cultural evolution of the understanding of the region and the definition of its role within the European framework. In a broader sense, the study also analyses the shift in paradigms from historical nationalism to modern regionalism against the backdrop of European, global, national and local historical developments as well as the shaping of the distinct identities of its multilingual and multi-ethnic population. 410 0$aCultural identity studies ;$vv. 10. 606 $aAustrians$zItaly$zTrentino-Alto Adige$xPolitics and government 606 $aAustrians$zItaly$zTrentino-Alto Adige$xSocial conditions 606 $aNationalism$zItaly$zTrentino-Alto Adige$xHistory 606 $aGroup identity$zItaly$zTrentino-Alto Adige$xHistory 606 $aCollective memory$zItaly$zTrentino-Alto Adige$xHistory 606 $aMinorities$xCivil rights$zEurope$vCase studies 606 $aNationalism$zEurope$vCase studies 606 $aRegionalism$xPolitical aspects$zEurope$vCase studies 607 $aTrentino-Alto Adige (Italy)$xPolitics and government 607 $aTrentino-Alto Adige (Italy)$xSocial conditions 610 $a1866 610 $a1866?2010 610 $a2010 610 $aApproaches to South Tyrol 610 $aDisquiet and Unrest, 1947-1960 610 $aGrote 610 $aNational 610 $aQuestion 610 $aQueston 610 $aRage 610 $aRegional 610 $aSouth 610 $aState 610 $aThe Regionalist Drive 610 $aTyrol 610 $aTyrolean Nationalisms before 1918 610 $aUnder Autonomy Rule 615 0$aAustrians$xPolitics and government. 615 0$aAustrians$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aNationalism$xHistory. 615 0$aGroup identity$xHistory. 615 0$aCollective memory$xHistory. 615 0$aMinorities$xCivil rights 615 0$aNationalism 615 0$aRegionalism$xPolitical aspects 676 $a945.3809 676 $a945/.3809 700 $aGrote$b Georg$f1966-$0194349 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910476921503321 996 $aThe South Tyrol question, 1866-2010$92141949 997 $aUNINA
