Despite this fact, struggles for decent living conditions have become key issues in the daily urban lives of many people in Brazil. Contesting the differentiated access to housing, social movements occupy empty buildings in the cities to challenge historically-rooted and excluding urban politics. Exploring the occupants' agency, Bea Wittger draws attention to the important role of female actors within the buildings. Through oral histories of participants of two squats in Rio de Janeiro, the book delivers a deep insight "from below" into their own perspectives on citizenship and gender. 330 1 $aBesprochen in:C3 - Bibliothek für Entwicklungspolitik, 5 (2017)Fraunhofer IRB, 5 (2017) 330 1 $a»Mit ihrem Buch gibt Bea Witters dezidierte Einblicke in die alltägliche Auseinandersetzung darum wie ein Recht auf Wohnen von den Besetzer_innen verwirklicht bzw. verteidigt wird und welche An- und Widersprüche damit verbunden sind.« 330 1 $a»Eine lesenswerte, in Teilen gegenüber der eigenen Position als Wissenschaftlerin sehr selbstkritische Studie, die Einblicke in heterogene Lebensentwürfe und Denkweisen zweier Hausbesetzungen in Rio de Janeiro zulässt.« 410 0$aUrban studies (Bielefeld, Germany) 517 2 $aWittger, Squatting in Rio de Janeiro$eConstructing Citizenship and Gender from Below 606 $aSocial Movements 606 $aHousing Movements 606 $aSquatting 606 $aSquatters Movement 606 $aGender 606 $aGender Relations 606 $aCitizenship 606 $aPentecostalism 606 $aReligion 606 $aUrban History 606 $aUrban Studies 606 $aCities 606 $aLatin America 606 $aBrazil 606 $aRio De Janeiro 606 $aUrban Politics 606 $aOral History 606 $aCity 606 $aPolitics 606 $aGender Studies 606 $aPolitical Sociology 606 $aSociology 615 4$aSocial Movements 615 4$aHousing Movements 615 4$aSquatting 615 4$aSquatters Movement 615 4$aGender 615 4$aGender Relations 615 4$aCitizenship 615 4$aPentecostalism 615 4$aReligion 615 4$aUrban History 615 4$aUrban Studies 615 4$aCities 615 4$aLatin America 615 4$aBrazil 615 4$aRio De Janeiro 615 4$aUrban Politics 615 4$aOral History 615 4$aCity 615 4$aPolitics 615 4$aGender Studies 615 4$aPolitical Sociology 615 4$aSociology 676 $a305.420981 700 $aWittger$b Bea$p
