While cases of stigmatisation had been reported since the thirteenth century, this era witnessed the development of the 'stigmatic': young women who attracted widespread interest thanks to the appearance of physical stigmata. To understand the popularity of these stigmatics we need to regard them as the 'saints' and religious 'celebrities' of their time. With their 'miraculous' bodies, they fit contemporary popular ideas (if not necessarily those of the Church) of what sanctity was. As knowledge about them spread via modern media and their fame became marketable, they developed into religious 'celebrities'. 410 0$aNumen Book Series ;$v167. 606 $aHistory 607 $aEurope$xReligious life and customs$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aEurope$xReligious life and customs$xHistory$y20th century 610 $aChristian mysticism 615 0$aHistory. 676 $a823/.912 700 $aOsselaer$b Tine Van$0854015 702 $aGraus$b Andrea 702 $aRossi$b Leonardo 702 $aSmeyers$b Kristof 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910476894903321 996 $aThe Devotion and Promotion of Stigmatics in Europe, c. 1800-1950$91906760 997 $aUNINA
