Extensive discussions on the role of language and other symbolic systems in culture, ethnographic method, and social interaction are also included. Ethnographic and linguistic examples are drawn from Sapir's fieldwork among native North Americans and from European and American society as well. Edward Sapir (1884-1939), one of this century's leading figures in American anthropology and linguistics, planned to publish a major theoretical statement on culture and psychology. He developed his ideas in a course of lectures presented at Yale University in the 1930's, which attracted a wide audience from many social science disciplines. Unfortunately, he died before the book he had contracted to publish could be realized. Like de Saussure's Cours de Linguistique Générale before it, this work has been reconstructed from student notes, in this case twenty-two sets, as well as from Sapir's manuscript materials. Judith Irvine's meticulous reconstruction makes Sapir's compelling ideas - of surprisingly contemporary resonance - available for the first time. 606 $aCulture 606 $aEthnopsychology 606 $aPersonality and culture 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aEthnopsychology. 615 0$aPersonality and culture. 676 $a306 686 $aCV 7500$2rvk 700 $aSapir$b Edward$f1884-1939.$0118866 701 $aIrvine$b Judith T$0166739 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789479403321 996 $aThe psychology of culture$93675921 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01785nas 2200493-a 450 001 9910473553303321 005 20240911213022.0 035 $a(CKB)110978977286306 035 $a(CONSER)---84644039- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110978977286306 100 $a19830303b19822003 --- a 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aLooking ahead 210 $aWashington, D.C. $cNational Planning Association$d©1982-©2003 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aTitle from caption. 311 08$aPrint version: Looking ahead (Washington, D.C. : 1982) 0747-525X (DLC) 84644039 (OCoLC)9275463 531 0 $aLook. ahead 606 $aEconomic history$y1971-1990$vPeriodicals 606 $aEconomic history$y1990-$vPeriodicals 606 $aInternational economic relations$vPeriodicals 606 $aEconomic history$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00901974 606 $aInternational economic relations$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00976891 607 $aUnited States$xEconomic conditions$y1981-2001$vPeriodicals 607 $aUnited States$xEconomic conditions$y2001-2009$vPeriodicals 607 $aUnited States$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 0$aEconomic history 615 0$aEconomic history 615 0$aInternational economic relations 615 7$aEconomic history. 615 7$aInternational economic relations. 676 $a330.9/005 712 02$aNational Planning Association. 712 02$aNational Policy Association (U.S.) 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910473553303321 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aLooking ahead$91184738 997 $aUNINA
