Hurricane Katrina provided clear evidence that these occurrences are both qualitatively and quantitatively different from other disasters. Recent tragedies, like the 2004 South Asia tsunami, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and resulting nuclear plant meltdown in Japan further illustrate that we are not prepared for such events. Written by top disaster scholars and practitioners, the book defines what constitutes a catastrophic event, outlining both the factors that can lead to catastrophes and the unique logistical, planning, and response challenges posed by them. Distinct from general disasters, these events are termed "catastrophic" due to the regional impact, impacts to logistics and infrastructure, the devastating effects on large-scale populations, and the ripple effects on regional and global economies. Preparedness and Response for Catastrophic Disasters examines why catastrophes must be approached differently. If governments, public administrators, and emergency management professionals are to succeed in protecting our populations, there must be consensus, decisiveness, and leadership in both the coordination and response. In addition, there must be a fundamental recognition that catastrophic events compromise the very infrastructure?public utilities, delivery of goods and service, schools, business functions, and government?that supports communities and upon which modern society is based. As such, the book explores how catastrophes can dramatically affect populations and addresses new, innovative, and fundamentally unique strategies communities can institute to better prepare populations for catastrophic events and their aftermath. 606 $aEmergency management 606 $aPreparedness$xGovernment policy 606 $aDisaster relief$xFinance 606 $aEmergency management$zUnited States 606 $aPreparedness$xGovernment policy$zUnited States 606 $aDisaster relief$zUnited States$xFinance 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEmergency management. 615 0$aPreparedness$xGovernment policy. 615 0$aDisaster relief$xFinance. 615 0$aEmergency management 615 0$aPreparedness$xGovernment policy 615 0$aDisaster relief$xFinance. 676 $a363.34/7 702 $aBissell$b Rick. 702 $aJensen$b Steven 702 $aFeldman-Jensen$b Shirley 801 0$bFlBoTFG 801 1$bFlBoTFG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910467807803321 996 $aPreparedness and response for catastrophic disasters$92485271 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02381oam 2200469 450 001 9910705603303321 005 20170606145811.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002452369 035 $a(OCoLC)989070857 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002452369 100 $a20170606d2017 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 13$aAn Act to Improve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Research Through a Focused Program of Investment on Affordable and Attainable Advances in Observational, Computing, and Modeling Capabilities to Support Substantial Improvement in Weather Forecasting and Prediction of High Impact Weather Events, to Expand Commercial Opportunities for the Provision of Weather Data, and for Other Purposes 210 1$a[Washington, D.C.] :$c[U.S. Government Publishing Office],$d2017. 215 $a1 online resource (38 unnumbered pages) 300 $aContains: Tsunami Warning, Education, and Research Act of 2017. 300 $a"Apr. 18, 2017 (H.R. 353)." 300 $a"131 Stat. 91." 300 $a"Public Law 115-25." 606 $aWeather forecasting$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 606 $aMeteorology$xResearch$zUnited States 606 $aTsunamis$xResearch$zUnited States$xFinance 606 $aTsunamis$zUnited States$xForecasting 606 $aNatural disaster warning systems$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 608 $aStatutes and codes.$2lcgft 615 0$aWeather forecasting$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aMeteorology$xResearch 615 0$aTsunamis$xResearch$xFinance. 615 0$aTsunamis$xForecasting. 615 0$aNatural disaster warning systems$xLaw and legislation 712 02$aUnited States. 801 0$bGPO 801 1$bGPO 801 2$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910705603303321 996 $aAn Act to Improve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Research Through a Focused Program of Investment on Affordable and Attainable Advances in Observational, Computing, and Modeling Capabilities to Support Substantial Improvement in Weather Forecasting and Prediction of High Impact Weather Events, to Expand Commercial Opportunities for the Provision of Weather Data, and for Other Purposes$93537915 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02743oam 2200589 a 450 001 9910791475103321 005 20231222211021.0 010 $a0-299-22503-8 024 7 $a2027/heb08764 035 $a(CKB)2560000000014993 035 $a(dli)HEB08764 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000425411 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11322969 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000425411 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10364775 035 $a(PQKB)11292635 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3444985 035 $a(OCoLC)646068349 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse12277 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3444985 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10375884 035 $a(MiU)MIU01000000000000011661348 035 $a(EXLCZ)992560000000014993 100 $a20070413h20072007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnummmmuuuu 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aPlotting history $ethe Russian historical novel in the Imperial Age /$fDan Ungurianu 210 1$aMadison, Wis. :$cUniversity of Wisconsin Press,$d2007. 210 4$d©2007 215 $a1 online resource (xii, 335 pages) $cillustrations 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 0 $a0-299-22500-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 309-323) and index. 327 $aIntroduction : fact, fiction, and the anxiety of genre -- An overview of the romantic era -- Fact and fiction in the romantic novel -- The changing and the unchanged -- Masterpieces in context : Taras bulba and The captain's daughter -- Tolstoy's "book" and a new kind of historical novel -- The age of positivism : "Historiographie romancée" -- The end of progress : facets of the modernist paradigm -- In lieu of a conclusion : A tale of three cities, or the Reincarnations of Saint Petersburg in the Russian historical novel. 330 $aTraces the development of the Russian historical novel from its inception in the romantic era to the emergence of Modernism on the eve of the Revolution.
