The first part, a historical ethnography, describes them as they existed at the onset of colonial rule. The second part zooms in on the negotiations between the Toba Batak elite, the missionaries of the German Rhenish Mission and colonial administrators about these customs showing the evolving views on desirable modernity of each contestant. The pillars of the Toba patrilineal kinship system were challenged, but alterations changed the way it was reproduced and gender relations for ever. 410 0$aVerhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde$v309. 606 $aToba-Batak (Indonesian people)$xHistory 606 $aToba-Batak (Indonesian people)$xKinship 606 $aKinship$zIndonesia$zTapanuli Utara$xHistory 606 $aChristianity and culture$zIndonesia$zTapanuli Utara$xHistory 606 $aSex role$zIndonesia$zTapanuli Utara$xHistory 606 $aMarriage$zIndonesia$zTapanuli Utara$xHistory 606 $aEthnology$zIndonesia$zTapanuli Utara 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aToba-Batak (Indonesian people)$xHistory. 615 0$aToba-Batak (Indonesian people)$xKinship. 615 0$aKinship$xHistory. 615 0$aChristianity and culture$xHistory. 615 0$aSex role$xHistory. 615 0$aMarriage$xHistory. 615 0$aEthnology 676 $a305.899/22462009034 700 $aBemmelen$b Sita van$01034205 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910467270303321 996 $aChristianity, colonization, and gender relations in North Sumatra$92453185 997 $aUNINA
