This book examines the different kinds of experiments and manipulative research strategies involved in understanding and eventually explaining such phenomena. Against this background, it evaluates contemporary accounts of scientific explanation, specifically the mechanistic and interventionist accounts, and finds them to be crucially incomplete. Besides, mechanisms and interventions cannot actually be combined in the way usually done in the literature. This book offers solutions to both these problems based on insights from experimental practice. It defends a new reading of the interventionist account, highlights the importance of non-interventionist studies for scientific inquiry, and supplies a taxonomy of experiments that makes it easy to see how the gaps in contemporary accounts of scientific explanation can be filled. The book concludes that a truly empirically adequate philosophy of science must take into account a much wider range of experimental research than has been done to date. With the taxonomy provided, this book serves a stepping-stone leading into a new era of philosophy of science-for cognitive neuroscience and beyond. 606 $aCognitive neuroscience$xPhilosophy 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCognitive neuroscience$xPhilosophy. 676 $a612.8/233 686 $aCC 5680$2rvk 700 $aKa?stner$b Lena$f1986-$01047170 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910467104603321 996 $aPhilosophy of cognitive neuroscience$92474580 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02658nam 2200589 450 001 9910815407803321 005 20170816143422.0 010 $a0-429-07224-4 010 $a1-4665-8316-9 035 $a(CKB)2670000000394420 035 $a(EBL)1386575 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001040696 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12444990 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001040696 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11001759 035 $a(PQKB)11721717 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1386575 035 $a(CaSebORM)9781466583177 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000394420 100 $a20130826h20142014 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aHandbook of differential entropy /$fJoseph Victor Michalowicz, Jonathan M. While differential entropy may seem to be a simple extension of the discrete case, it is a more complex measure that often requires a more careful treatment.Handbook of Differential Entropy provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject for researchers and students in information theory.
