The tension between fictional female performers and other textual voices can be seen to refigure the cultural debate over the 'voice' of women in aesthetically complex ways. By focusing on singers, actresses, preachers and speakers, this book traces and explores an important tradition of feminine articulation.Drawing on critical approaches in literary studies, gender studies and philosophy, the book conceptualizes voice for the discussion of narrative texts. Examining voice both as a thematic concern and as an aesthetic effect, the individual chapters analyse how the actual articulation by female performers correlates with their cultural visibility and agency. What this study foregrounds is how women characters succeed in making themselves heard even if their voices are silenced in the end. 410 0$aBuchreihe der Anglia ;$v58. 606 $aEnglish literature$y19th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEnglish literature 676 $a820.8008 700 $aStraumann$b Barbara$01027539 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910466775703321 996 $aFemale performers in British and American fiction$92443043 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02042nam 2200553 450 001 9910787839203321 005 20230803032310.0 010 $a0-8101-6635-6 035 $a(CKB)2670000000560573 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001036547 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11575439 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001036547 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11042056 035 $a(PQKB)10300552 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5491109 035 $a(OCoLC)867739728 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse31162 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5491109 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000560573 100 $a20180829d2013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aToxic voices $ethe villain from early Soviet literature to Socialist realism /$fEric Laursen 210 1$aEvanston, Illinois :$cNorthwestern University Press,$d2013. 215 $a1 online resource (xiii, 170 pages) 225 1 $aNorthwestern University Press studies in Russian literature and theory 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 $a0-8101-2865-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages 125-155) and index. 327 $aIntroduction: Scrounging in the Soviet garbage pit -- Writing a precarious balance -- He does not love us when we are dirty -- Things that should not be found -- Lost in translation -- Conclusion: Writers forward!. 410 0$aStudies in Russian literature and theory. 606 $aRussian literature$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSocialist realism in literature 606 $aVillains in literature 615 0$aRussian literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSocialist realism in literature. 615 0$aVillains in literature. 676 $a891.7093580904 700 $aLaursen$b Eric$f1957-$01549126 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910787839203321 996 $aToxic voices$93806788 997 $aUNINA
