Maud Mandel shows how the conflict in fact emerged from processes internal to French society itself even as it was shaped by affairs elsewhere, particularly in North Africa during the era of decolonization. Mandel examines moments in which conflicts between Muslims and Jews became a matter of concern to French police, the media, and an array of self-appointed spokesmen from both communities: Israel's War of Independence in 1948, France's decolonization of North Africa, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the 1968 student riots, and François Mitterrand's experiments with multiculturalism in the 1980's. She takes an in-depth, on-the-ground look at interethnic relations in Marseille, which is home to the country's largest Muslim and Jewish populations outside of Paris. She reveals how Muslims and Jews in France have related to each other in diverse ways throughout this history--as former residents of French North Africa, as immigrants competing for limited resources, as employers and employees, as victims of racist aggression, as religious minorities in a secularizing state, and as French citizens. In Muslims and Jews in France, Mandel traces the way these multiple, complex interactions have been overshadowed and obscured by a reductionist narrative of Muslim-Jewish polarization. 606 $aMuslims$zFrance$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aMuslims$zFrance$xSocial conditions$y21st century 606 $aJews$zFrance$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aJews$zFrance$xSocial conditions$y21st century 606 $aMuslims$xCultural assimilation$zFrance 606 $aJews$xCultural assimilation$zFrance 606 $aSocial integration$zFrance 607 $aFrance$xEthnic relations 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aFrance. 610 $aFrench Jews. 610 $aFrench Muslims. 610 $aFrench minority policies. 610 $aIsrael. 610 $aJews. 610 $aMarseille. 610 $aMiddle East. 610 $aMuslims. 610 $aMuslim?ewish relations. 610 $aNorth Africa. 610 $aNorth African Jew. 610 $aPalestine. 610 $aPalsetine. 610 $aanti-Semitism. 610 $acitizenship. 610 $acolonial policy. 610 $aconflict. 610 $adecolonization. 610 $adisplacement. 610 $aethno-religious participation. 610 $aforeign policy. 610 $aintegration. 610 $amigration. 610 $amixed immigrant neighborhoods. 610 $aparticularism. 610 $apluriculturalism. 610 $apolarization. 610 $apolitical participation. 610 $aracism. 610 $aracist aggression. 610 $areligious minority. 610 $astudent uprising. 615 0$aMuslims$xSocial conditions 615 0$aMuslims$xSocial conditions 615 0$aJews$xSocial conditions 615 0$aJews$xSocial conditions 615 0$aMuslims$xCultural assimilation 615 0$aJews$xCultural assimilation 615 0$aSocial integration 676 $a305.6/970944 700 $aMandel$b Maud$f1967-$01041040 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453811503321 996 $aMuslims and Jews in France$92464313 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02756nam 2200589 450 001 9910808193103321 005 20230829010006.0 010 $a1-283-12226-X 010 $a9786613122261 010 $a0-8264-0990-3 035 $a(CKB)2670000000092778 035 $a(EBL)711016 035 $a(OCoLC)727649527 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000521292 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12148940 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000521292 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10517540 035 $a(PQKB)10140052 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC711016 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5309657 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5309657 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11518624 035 $a(OCoLC)1027203655 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000092778 100 $a20180314h20062006 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aBritish universities $epast and present /$fRobert Anderson 210 1$aLondon, [England] ;$aNew York, New York :$cHambledon Continuum,$d2006. 210 4$dİ2006 215 $a1 online resource (257 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-85285-347-6 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Half-title; Title; Copyright; Contents; Introduction; 1 Serving Church and State; 2 Currents of Change; 3 Oxbridge Reformed; 4 Effortless Superiority; 5 Province and Metropolis; 6 National Identities; 7 Ideas of the University; 8 Interwar Conservatism; 9 Postwar Revolution; 10 The Robbins Era; 11 State or Market?; 12 Past and Present; Notes; Guide to Further Reading; Index 330 $aThis book is both a concise history of British universities and their place in society over eight centuries, and a penetrating analysis of current university problems and policies as seen in the light of that history. It explains how the modern university system has developed since the Victorian era, and gives special attention to changes in policy since the Second World War, including the effects of the Robbins report, the rise and fall of the binary system, the impact of the Thatcher era, and the financial crises which have beset universities in recent years.
