Greg Forter interprets modernism as an effort to mourn a form of white manhood that fused the 'masculine' with the 'feminine'. He argues that modernists were engaged in a poignant yet deeply conflicted effort to hold on to socially 'feminine' and racially marked aspects of identity, qualities that the new social order encouraged them to disparage. Examining works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner and Willa Cather, Forter shows how these writers shared an ambivalence toward the feminine and an unease over existing racial categories that made it difficult for them to work through the loss of the masculinity they mourned. Gender, Race, and Mourning in American Modernism offers a bold reading of canonical modernism in the United States. 517 3 $aGender, Race, & Mourning in American Modernism 606 $aAmerican fiction$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aModernism (Literature)$zUnited States 606 $aGender identity in literature 606 $aRace in literature 606 $aGrief in literature 615 0$aAmerican fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aModernism (Literature) 615 0$aGender identity in literature. 615 0$aRace in literature. 615 0$aGrief in literature. 676 $a813/.52093532 700 $aForter$b Greg$01030905 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464732903321 996 $aGender, race, and mourning in American modernism$92483271 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01534nam 2200469 450 001 9910522952503321 005 20240219090818.0 010 $a3-662-63632-8 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6838879 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6838879 035 $a(CKB)20275202000041 035 $a(OCoLC)1292361542 035 $a(PPN)259389382 035 $a(EXLCZ)9920275202000041 100 $a20220905d2022 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$a101 of surgical instruments $enaming, recognizing, handling and presenting /$fMargret Liehn and Hannelore Schlautmann 210 1$aBerlin, Germany :$cSpringer-Verlag,$d[2022] 210 4$d©2022 215 $a1 online resource (225 pages) 311 08$aPrint version: Liehn, Margret 101 of Surgical Instruments Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin / Heidelberg,c2021 9783662636312 606 $aSurgical instruments and apparatus 606 $aNursing 606 $aAparells i instruments quirúrgics$2thub 608 $aLlibres electrònics$2thub 615 0$aSurgical instruments and apparatus. 615 0$aNursing. 615 7$aAparells i instruments quirúrgics 676 $a617.9178 700 $aLiehn$b Margret$01081138 702 $aSchlautmann$b Hannelore 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910522952503321 996 $a101 of Surgical Instruments$92594754 997 $aUNINA
