Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century. 410 0$aCollected works of Jeremy Bentham. 1968. 606 $aPhilosophers$zGreat Britain$xCorrespondence 606 $aPersonal emergency response systems 606 $aDiaries, letters & journals$2bicssc 606 $aPhilosophy$2bicssc 606 $aWestern philosophy: c 1600 to c 1900$2bicssc 606 $aEthics & moral philosophy$2bicssc 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 608 $aPersonal correspondence. 615 0$aPhilosophers$xCorrespondence. 615 0$aPersonal emergency response systems. 615 7$aDiaries, letters & journals. 615 7$aPhilosophy. 615 7$aWestern philosophy: c 1600 to c 1900. 615 7$aEthics & moral philosophy. 676 $a192 700 $aBentham$b Jeremy$f1748-1832$0123453 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910773214103321 996 $aCorrespondence of Jeremy Bentham$9634832 997 $aUNINA
