The Hidden 1970's explores the distinctiveness of those years, a time when radicals tried to change the world as the world changed around them. This powerful collection is a compelling assessment of left-wing social movements in a period many have described as dominated by conservatism or confusion. Scholars examine critical and largely buried legacies of the 1970's. The decade of Nixon's fall and Reagan's rise also saw widespread indigenous militancy, prisoner uprisings, transnational campaigns for self-determination, pacifism, and queer theories of play as political action. Contributors focus on diverse topics, including the internationalization of Black Power and Native sovereignty, organizing for Puerto Rican independence among Latinos and whites, and women's self-defense. Essays and ideas trace the roots of struggles from the 1960's through the 1970's, providing fascinating insight into the myriad ways that radical social movements shaped American political culture in the 1970's and the many ways they continue to do so today. 606 $aRadicalism$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aSocial movements$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aPolitical culture$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUnited States$xSocial conditions$y1960-1980 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aRadicalism$xHistory 615 0$aSocial movements$xHistory 615 0$aPolitical culture$xHistory 676 $a303.48/4097309047 700 $aBerger$b Dan, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut.$01040947 701 $aBerger$b Dan$f1981-$01040947 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464068203321 996 $aThe hidden 1970s$92464172 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02598nam 2200517 450 001 9910797759103321 005 20230808212606.0 010 $a90-04-30686-2 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004306868 035 $a(CKB)3710000000504663 035 $a(EBL)4397601 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001579222 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16255484 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001579222 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)13809202 035 $a(PQKB)11461401 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4397601 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004306868 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000504663 100 $a20160616h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aPractical soldiers $eIsrael's military thought and its formative factors /$fby Avi Kober 210 1$aLeiden, Netherlands ;$aBoston, [Massachusetts] :$cBrill,$d2016. 210 4$dİ2016 215 $a1 online resource (210 p.) 225 1 $aHistory of Warfare,$x1385-7827 ;$vVolume 107 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a90-04-30653-6 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aPreliminary Material -- 1 Military Thought and the Formative Factors Affecting It -- 2 Israeli Intellectual and Modern Focus -- 3 Systemic Formative Factors -- 4 Unit (State)-Level Factors -- 5 Conclusion -- Appendix -- Bibliography -- Index. 330 $aThis book suggests a general framework for the analysis of formative factors in military thought and offers an account of the Israel Defense Force?s state of intellectualism and modernity. This account is followed by an attempt to trace the factors that have shaped Israeli military thought. The explanations are a mixture of realist and non-realist factors, which can be found at both the systemic and the state level of analysis. At the systemic level, realist evaluations focus on factors such as the dominance of the technological dimension and the pervasiveness of asymmetrical, low-intensity conflict; whereas at the state level one can find realist explanations, cultural factors, and societal influences. Moral and legal constraints also factor into both the systemic and state levels. 410 0$aHistory of warfare ;$vVolume 107. 607 $aIsrael$xArmed Forces$xHistory$y21st century 676 $a355.03355694 700 $aKober$b Avi$01485896 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797759103321 996 $aPractical soldiers$93705188 997 $aUNINA
