Evolutionary biologists have shown that moral cognition evolved to aid cooperation; developmental psychologists have demonstrated that the elements that underpin morality are in place much earlier than we thought; and social neuroscientists have begun to map brain circuits implicated in moral decision making. This volume offers an overview of current research on the moral brain, examining the topic from disciplinary perspectives that range from anthropology and neurophilosophy to justice and law. The contributors address the evolution of morality, considering precursors of human morality in other species as well as uniquely human adaptations. They examine motivations for morality, exploring the roles of passion, extreme sacrifice, and cooperation. They go on to consider the development of morality, from infancy to adolescence; findings on neurobiological mechanisms of moral cognition; psychopathic immorality; and the implications for justice and law of a more biological understanding of morality. These new findings may challenge our intuitions about society and justice, but they may also lead to more a humane and flexible legal system"--Provided by publisher. 606 $aCognitive neuroscience 606 $aNeurosciences$xSocial aspects 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCognitive neuroscience. 615 0$aNeurosciences$xSocial aspects. 676 $a612.8/233 700 $aDecety$b Jean$01031576 702 $aWheatley$b Thalia$f1970- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910463718903321 996 $aThe moral brain$92483914 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01554nam 2200349Ia 450 001 996385383903316 005 20221107212637.0 035 $a(CKB)1000000000605546 035 $a(EEBO)2248547850 035 $a(OCoLC)42475314 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000605546 100 $a19991002d1646 uy | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 00$aTo the hon[ble]. the House of Commons now assembled in the high court of Parliament, the humble petition of John Lilburne Leift.
