This study is a translation of the story both in a strict textual-linguistic sense and in a more general interpretive sense, providing an understanding of what the performance means to its Banyumas audience. More important, it shows how the puppeteer transforms the culturally universal traditions of Javanese ritual, shadow-puppet theater, and music to particularize the entire performance event for a local audience. The book is three things: a major conceptual study that develops, advocates, and applies an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the performance process, an important secondary source on rural Javanese culture and arts (most works on Java focus on the court centers), and a useful primary source on wayang theater?since it includes the Javanese text and English translation of a complete story with music transcriptions provided in an appendix. The Javanese texts and their English translations are laid out side by side to facilitate reading while listening to the audio recording on the enclosed dvd. The book contains twenty-five beautifully rendered illustrations of Banyumas-style wayang puppets (major characters in the story) by two Javanese artists. 615 0$aWayang. 615 0$aWayang plays. 615 0$aMusic$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aGamelan music. 676 $a899.2222 700 $aLysloff$b Rene? Oil and American Identity offers a fresh perspective on the subject by reframing 'energy dependency' as a cultural discourse with intimate connections to American views on independence, freedom, consumption, abundance, progress and American exceptionalism. Through a detailed reading of primary literature, Sebastian Herbstreuth also shows how the dangers of foreign oil are linked to American descriptions of foreign oil producers as culturally different und thus 'undependable'. Herbstreuth shows how even reliable imports from the Middle East are portrayed as dangerous and undesirable because this region is particularly 'foreign' from an American point of view, while oil from friendly countries like Canada is cast as a benign form of energy trade. Oil and American Identity rewrites the history of U.S. foreign oil dependence as a cultural history of the United States in the 20th century."--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aPolitics & international relations (Bloomsbury Publishing) 606 $aEnergy policy$zUnited States 606 $aPetroleum industry and trade$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States 606 $aPetroleum industry and trade$zUnited States$xPublic opinion 606 $aAmerican Government and Politics 606 $aMiddle East Politics 606 $aPolitics & International Relations 606 $2International relations 607 $aMiddle East$xForeign relations$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$zMiddle East 615 0$aEnergy policy 615 0$aPetroleum industry and trade$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aPetroleum industry and trade$xPublic opinion. 615 4$aAmerican Government and Politics 615 4$aMiddle East Politics 615 4$aPolitics & International Relations 676 $a973.927 700 $aHerbstreuth$b Sebastian$01586937 801 0$bUkLoBP 801 1$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910794607903321 996 $aThe cultural left and the Reagan era$93874198 997 $aUNINA
