The seeming lack of coherence between argument and narrative in this treatise has puzzled many scholars. Combining an analysis of the overall structure of the argument and a detailed philological commentary, this study shows that Augustine?s text forms a well-composed unity. The study is based on discourse-linguistic and narratological concepts as well as an analysis of the global structure of the narratives. Relying on this combined approach Rose demonstrates how Augustine explores the full breadth of his narrative material in the service of his argument. In addition, this book situates Augustine?s text in its cultural-historical context. 410 0$aAmsterdam Studies in Classical Philology$v20. 606 $aBurial$xEarly works to 1800 606 $aDead$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xEarly works to 1800 606 $aFuneral rites and ceremonies$xEarly works to 1800 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aBurial$xEarly works to 1800. 615 0$aDead$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xEarly works to 1800. 615 0$aFuneral rites and ceremonies$xEarly works to 1800. 676 $a236/.1 700 $aRose$b Paula Johanna$f1968-$0949342 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462885403321 996 $aA commentary on Augustine's De cura pro mortuis gerenda$92145667 997 $aUNINA
