It is often called the interregnum because of its political instability, but that term does not do justice to the fact that the civil war was a chapter of Ottoman history in its own right. This book is the first full-length study of that chapter, which began with Timur?s dismemberment of the early Ottoman Empire following his defeat of Bayezid ?the Thunderbolt? at Ankara (1402). After Timur?s departure, what was left of the Ottoman realm was contested by Bayezid?s sons in a series of bloody wars involving many internal factions and foreign powers. As part of those wars some of the earliest Ottoman historical literature was produced in the courts of the warring princes, especially Mehmed Çelebi, who was the final winner and needed to justify killing his brothers. This book is a detailed reconstruction of events based on the available sources, as well as a study of the period?s political culture as reflected in its historical narratives. 410 0$aOttoman Empire and its heritage ;$vv. 38. 606 $aAnkara, Battle of, Ankara, Turkey, 1402 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$yInvasion of Timur, 1402$xCampaigns 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$yBayezid I, 1389-1403 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$yOttoman Empire, 1288-1918 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aAnkara, Battle of, Ankara, Turkey, 1402. 676 $a956/.015 700 $aKastritsis$b Dimitris J$0867443 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453831803321 996 $aThe sons of Bayezid$91936166 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04345nam 2200745 a 450 001 9910462560503321 005 20211201144956.0 010 $a1-283-64620-X 010 $a1-4008-4475-4 024 7 $a10.1515/9781400844753 035 $a(CKB)2670000000275447 035 $a(EBL)1040748 035 $a(OCoLC)813844021 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000755643 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11496692 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000755643 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10730780 035 $a(PQKB)10460962 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1040748 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000406975 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse43186 035 $a(DE-B1597)453835 035 $a(OCoLC)979758427 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781400844753 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1040748 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10611431 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL395870 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000275447 100 $a20120419d2013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aEurope and the Islamic world$b[electronic resource] $ea history /$fJohn Tolan, Gilles Veinstein, and Henry Laurens ; translated by Jane Marie Todd ; with a Foreword by John L. In this landmark book, three eminent historians bring to life the complex and tumultuous relations between Genoans and Tunisians, Alexandrians and the people of Constantinople, Catalans and Maghrebis--the myriad groups and individuals whose stories reflect the common cultural, intellectual, and religious heritage of Europe and Islam. Since the seventh century, when the armies of Constantinople and Medina fought for control of Syria and Palestine, there has been ongoing contact between the Muslim world and the West. This sweeping history vividly recounts the wars and the crusades, the alliances and diplomacy, commerce and the slave trade, technology transfers, and the intellectual and artistic exchanges. Here readers are given an unparalleled introduction to key periods and events, including the Muslim conquests, the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, the commercial revolution of the medieval Mediterranean, the intellectual and cultural achievements of Muslim Spain, the crusades and Spanish reconquest, the rise of the Ottomans and their conquest of a third of Europe, European colonization and decolonization, and the challenges and promise of this entwined legacy today. As provocative as it is groundbreaking, this book describes this shared history in all its richness and diversity, revealing how ongoing encounters between Europe and Islam have profoundly shaped both. 606 $aIslamic civilization$xWestern influences 607 $aEurope$xRelations$zMiddle East 607 $aMiddle East$xRelations$zEurope 607 $aEurope$xRelations$zIslamic countries 607 $aIslamic countries$xRelations$zEurope 607 $aEurope$xCivilization$xIslamic influences 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aIslamic civilization$xWestern influences. 676 $a303.48/2401767 700 $aTolan$b John Victor$f1959-$0752204 701 $aVeinstein$b Gilles$0242239 701 $aLaurens$b Henry$f1954-$0218664 701 $aTodd$b Jane Marie$f1957-$0985926 701 $aEsposito$b John L$0496006 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462560503321 996 $aEurope and the Islamic world$92432091 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04390nam 2200757 450 001 9910780521103321 005 20231206231203.0 010 $a1-4426-8482-8 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442684829 035 $a(CKB)2430000000001923 035 $a(OCoLC)311308366 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10269879 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000382542 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11277335 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000382542 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10395212 035 $a(PQKB)10777574 035 $a(CaBNvSL)slc00222066 035 $a(CaPaEBR)418990 035 $a(DE-B1597)464074 035 $a(OCoLC)1013954462 035 $a(OCoLC)944177032 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442684829 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4672361 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11258030 035 $a(OCoLC)958581391 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/0d3sb1 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4672361 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_104214 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3261291 035 $a(EXLCZ)992430000000001923 100 $a20160923h20072007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aStrategic science in the public interest $eCanada's government laboratories and science-based agencies /$fG. Focusing on federal labs and agencies, Strategic Science in the Public Interest explores how these labs have been located within, and often buried by, the larger commercially-focused federal innovation agenda.G. Bruce Doern and Jeffrey S. Kinder examine four labs whose mandates deal with the Alberta oil sands, environmental technologies, wildlife research, and mining and metals, respectively. The authors use these cases to explain why a better middle-level approach to analysis is needed for strategic public interest-centred government science. They illustrate the importance of understanding the variety, as well as the similarity, of federal science and technology labs and agencies, and of instituting policies that reflect this diversity. The growing importance of Related Science Activities (RSA) is also explored, as well as the core trade-offs between commercial and public goods science in their mandates and their internal capacities. 606 $aScientific bureaus$zCanada 606 $aLaboratories$zCanada 606 $aScience and state$zCanada 607 $aCanada$2fast 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aScientific bureaus 615 0$aLaboratories 615 0$aScience and state 676 $a352.7/450971 700 $aDoern$b G.
