In Seeing Politics Otherwise, Patricia Vieira uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore the interrelation of politics and representations of vision and blindness in Latin American and Iberian literature, film, and art.Vieira's discussion focuses on three literary works: Graciliano Ramos's Memoirs of Prison, Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden, and José Saramago's Blindness, with supplemental analyses of sculpture and film by Ana Maria Pacheco, Bruno Barreto, and Marco Bechis. These artists use metaphors of blindness to denounce the totalizing gaze of dictatorial regimes. Rather than equating blindness with deprivation, Vieira argues that shadows, blindfolds, and blindness are necessary elements for re-imagining the political world and re-acquiring a political voice. Seeing Politics Otherwise offers a compelling analysis of vision and its forcible deprivation in the context of art and political protest. 410 0$aUniversity of Toronto romance series. 606 $aLatin American fiction$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aPortuguese fiction$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aBlindness in literature 606 $aLatin American literature$xPolitical aspects 606 $aPolitical violence in motion pictures 606 $aBlindness in motion pictures 606 $aVision in literature 606 $aVision in motion pictures 606 $aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects$zLatin America 606 $aArt$xPolitical aspects$zLatin America 606 $aPortuguese literature$xPolitical aspects 606 $aPolitical violence in literature 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aLatin American fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aPortuguese fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aBlindness in literature. 615 0$aLatin American literature$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aPolitical violence in motion pictures. 615 0$aBlindness in motion pictures. 615 0$aVision in literature. 615 0$aVision in motion pictures. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aArt$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aPortuguese literature$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aPolitical violence in literature. 676 $a869.3/4209358 700 $aVieira$b Patricia I.$f1977-$0921012 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462551803321 996 $aSeeing politics otherwise$92065735 997 $aUNINA
