His father, Arthur, served as Military Governor of the Philippines while Douglas was a student at West Point, and the younger MacArthur would serve several tours of duty in that country over the next four decades, becoming friends with several influential Filipinos, including the country's future president, Emanuel L. Quezon. In 1935, he became Quezon's military advisor, a post he held after retiring from the U.S. Army and at the time of Japan's invasion of 1941. As Supreme Commander for the Southwest Pacific, MacArthur led American forces throughout the Pacific War. He officially accepted Japan's surrender in 1945 and would later oversee the Allied occupation of Japan from 1945 to 1951. He then led the UN Command in the Korean War from 1950 to 1951, until he was dismissed from his post by President Truman. In MacArthur in Asia, the distinguished Japanese historian Hiroshi Masuda offers a new perspective on the American icon, focusing on his experiences in the Philippines, Japan, and Korea and highlighting the importance of the general's staff-the famous "Bataan Boys" who served alongside MacArthur throughout the Asian arc of his career-to both MacArthur's and the region's history. First published to wide acclaim in Japanese in 2009 and translated into English for the first time, this book uses a wide range of sources-American and Japanese, official records and oral histories-to present a complex view of MacArthur, one that illuminates his military decisions during the Pacific campaign and his administration of the Japanese Occupation. 606 $aGenerals$zUnited States$vBiography 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$xCampaigns$zAsia 607 $aJapan$xHistory$yAllied occupation, 1945-1952 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGenerals 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945$xCampaigns 676 $a355.0092 676 $aB 700 $aMasuda$b Hiroshi$f1947-$0706448 701 $aYamamoto$b Reiko$01042368 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462149703321 996 $aMacArthur in Asia$92466563 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04357oam 2200745I 450 001 9910785239703321 005 20230725024954.0 010 $a1-134-00850-3 010 $a1-134-00851-1 010 $a1-282-88644-4 010 $a9786612886447 010 $a0-203-88063-3 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203880630 035 $a(CKB)2670000000046887 035 $a(EBL)557239 035 $a(OCoLC)670411028 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000423654 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11929692 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000423654 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10440978 035 $a(PQKB)10352161 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC557239 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL557239 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10422016 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL288644 035 $a(OCoLC)711617892 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000046887 100 $a20180706d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aMuslim women and sport /$fedited by Tansin Benn, Gertrud Pfister and Haifaa Jawad 210 1$aLondon :$cRoutledge,$d2011. 215 $a1 online resource (297 p.) 225 1 $aInternational studies in physical education and youth sport 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-415-52237-4 311 $a0-415-49076-6 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aBook Cover; Title; Copyright; Contents; Illustrations; Contributors; Foreword; Acknowledgements; Introduction: Muslim women and sport; Part I: Underlying concepts; 1 Reaffirming the values of physical education, physical activity and sport in the lives of young Muslim women; 2 Islam, women and sport; 3 Muslimske kvinder og idręt i diasporaer: Teorier, diskurser og metoder - analyse af et dansk eksempel; Part II: National perspectives; 4 Women in sports leadership in Bahrain 327 $a5 'Ich ta?nzele so zwischen den Kulturen . . .': Bewegung, Spiel und Sport muslimischer Ma?dchen und Frauen in Deutschland6 Physical activities and sport for women in Iran; 7 The Sultanate of Oman and the position of girls and women in physical education and sport; 8 Women and sport in Syria; 9 Gu?c?lenmek ic?in Mu?cadele: Tu?rkiye'de Kadinlarin ve Genc? The book presents an overview of current research into constructs of gender, the role of religion and the importance of situation, and looks closely at what Islam has to say about women's participation in sport and what Muslim women themselves have to say about their participation i 410 0$aInternational studies in physical education and youth sport. 606 $aSports for women$zIslamic countries 606 $aMuslim athletes$zSoutheast Asia 606 $aWomen athletes$zIslamic countries 606 $aWomen$zIslamic countries 615 0$aSports for women 615 0$aMuslim athletes 615 0$aWomen athletes 615 0$aWomen 676 $a796.088/297 701 $aBenn$b Tansin$01491689 701 $aJawad$b H.
