This book concentrates on the way in which the two, after an initial period of relative independence, confronted each other, both in and around the royal courts and in society at large. In this confrontation, Buddhism was strong in philosophical debate, but could not compete with Brahmanism in the services it could provide to the centres of political power, primarily ritual protection and practical advice. Buddhism evolved in both areas, providing practical advice to lay people and rulers from early Mahayana onward, and ritual protection in its Tantric developments. Some of these developments came too late, though, and could not prevent the disappearance of Buddhism from the subcontinent. 410 0$aHandbuch der Orientalistik.$nZweite Abteilung,$pIndien ;$vv. 24. 606 $aBuddhism$xRelations$xBrahmanism 606 $aBrahmanism$xRelations$xBuddhism 606 $aBuddhism$zIndia$xHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aBuddhism$xRelations$xBrahmanism. 615 0$aBrahmanism$xRelations$xBuddhism. 615 0$aBuddhism$xHistory. 676 $a294.5/31 700 $aBronkhorst$b Johannes$f1946-$0640095 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910461389403321 996 $aBuddhism in the shadow of brahmanism$91558663 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02307oas 2200853 a 450 001 9910263958903321 005 20260127110914.0 011 $a1469-9400 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2011311-0 035 $a(OCoLC)45342422 035 $a(CONSER) 2002238331 035 $a(CKB)954925275501 035 $a(DE-599)2011311-0 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925275501 100 $a20001113a19929999 sy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aJournal of contemporary China =$eDang dai Zhongguo 210 $aLondon $cCarfax 210 31$a[Abingdon, UK] :$cTaylor & Francis 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aImprint varies: Abingdon, Oxfordshire, UK : Carfax Pub., 1996-2004; Routledge Pub., 2005- 311 08$a1067-0564 517 3 $aDang dai Zhongguo 517 1 $aJCC 606 $aPolitics and government$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01919741 607 $aChina$vPeriodicals 607 $aChina$xPolitics and government$y1976-2002$vPeriodicals 607 $aChina$xPolitics and government$y2002-$vPeriodicals 607 $aChine$vPe?riodiques 607 $aChine$xPolitique et gouvernement$y1976-$vPe?riodiques 607 $aChine$xPolitique et gouvernement$y1976-2002$vPe?riodiques 607 $aChina$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJcrd4RjtCBk4wfMhTwwG3 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 7$aPolitics and government 676 $a951.05 712 02$aCenter for Modern China, 801 0$bRCE 801 1$bRCE 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bIUL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bF#A 801 2$bMUQ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCGU 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bHNK 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWT2 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bCUI 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bQGK 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bUBY 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910263958903321 996 $aJournal of Contemporary China$91321146 997 $aUNINA
