Yet these concerns do not take the same shape around the world. In this innovative ethnography of in vitro fertilization in Ecuador, Elizabeth F.S. Roberts explores how reproduction by way of biotechnological assistance is not only accepted but embraced despite widespread poverty and condemnation from the Catholic Church. Roberts' intimate portrait of IVF practitioners and their patients reveals how technological intervention is folded into an Andean understanding of reproduction as always assisted, whether through kin or God. She argues that the Ecuadorian incarnation of reproductive technology is less about a national desire for modernity than it is a product of colonial racial history, Catholic practice, and kinship configurations. God's Laboratory offers a grounded introduction to critical debates in medical anthropology and science studies, as well as a nuanced ethnography of the interplay between science, religion, race and history in the formation of Andean families. 606 $aFertilization in vitro, Human - Religious aspects - Catholic Church 606 $aFertilization in vitro, Human -- Religious aspects -- Catholic Church 606 $aHuman reproductive technology - Andes Region 606 $aHuman reproductive technology -- Andes Region 606 $aHuman reproductive technology - Ecuador 606 $aHuman reproductive technology -- Ecuador 606 $aMedical anthropology - Andes Region 606 $aMedical anthropology -- Andes Region 606 $aMedical anthropology - Ecuador 606 $aMedical anthropology -- Ecuador 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural 606 $aHuman reproductive technology$xCatholic Church$xReligious aspects$zEcuador 606 $aHuman reproductive technology$zAndes Region 606 $aFertilization in vitro, Human$zEcuador 606 $aMedical anthropology$zAndes Region 606 $aMedical anthropology 606 $aPersons 606 $aReproductive Techniques 606 $aChristianity 606 $aInvestigative Techniques 606 $aTherapeutics 606 $aReligion 606 $aNamed Groups 606 $aAnalytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment 606 $aHumanities 606 $aTissue Donors 606 $aCatholicism 606 $aReproductive Techniques, Assisted 606 $aMedicine$2HILCC 606 $aHealth & Biological Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aGynecology & Obstetrics$2HILCC 608 $aElectronic books. 615 4$aFertilization in vitro, Human - Religious aspects - Catholic Church. 615 4$aFertilization in vitro, Human -- Religious aspects -- Catholic Church. 615 4$aHuman reproductive technology - Andes Region. 615 4$aHuman reproductive technology -- Andes Region. 615 4$aHuman reproductive technology - Ecuador. 615 4$aHuman reproductive technology -- Ecuador. 615 4$aMedical anthropology - Andes Region. 615 4$aMedical anthropology -- Andes Region. 615 4$aMedical anthropology - Ecuador. 615 4$aMedical anthropology -- Ecuador. 615 4$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / Cultural. 615 0$aHuman reproductive technology$xCatholic Church$xReligious aspects 615 0$aHuman reproductive technology 615 0$aFertilization in vitro, Human 615 0$aMedical anthropology 615 0$aMedical anthropology 615 2$aPersons 615 2$aReproductive Techniques 615 2$aChristianity 615 2$aInvestigative Techniques 615 2$aTherapeutics 615 2$aReligion 615 2$aNamed Groups 615 2$aAnalytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment 615 2$aHumanities 615 2$aTissue Donors 615 2$aCatholicism 615 2$aReproductive Techniques, Assisted 615 7$aMedicine 615 7$aHealth & Biological Sciences 615 7$aGynecology & Obstetrics 676 $a616.6 920609866 700 $aRoberts$b Elizabeth F.
