The root problem is greenhouse gas emissions, and the fundamental solution is curbing those emissions. Climate geoengineering has often been considered to be a "last-ditch" response to climate change, to be used only if climate change damage should produce extreme hardship. Although the likelihood of eventually needing to resort to these efforts grows with every year of inaction on emissions control, there is a lack of information on these ways of potentially intervening in the climate system. As one of a two-book report, this volume of Climate Intervention discusses albedo modification - changing the fraction of incoming solar radiation that reaches the surface. This approach would deliberately modify the energy budget of Earth to produce a cooling designed to compensate for some of the effects of warming associated with greenhouse gas increases. The prospect of large-scale albedo modification raises political and governance issues at national and global levels, as well as ethical concerns. Climate Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth discusses some of the social, political, and legal issues surrounding these proposed techniques. It is far easier to modify Earth's albedo than to determine whether it should be done or what the consequences might be of such an action. One serious concern is that such an action could be unilaterally undertaken by a small nation or smaller entity for its own benefit without international sanction and regardless of international consequences. Transparency in discussing this subject is critical. In the spirit of that transparency, Climate Intervention: Reflecting Sunlight to Cool Earth was based on peer-reviewed literature and the judgments of the authoring committee; no new research was done as part of this study and all data and information used are from entirely open sources. By helping to bring light to this topic area, this book will help leaders to be far more knowledgeable about the consequences of albedo modification approaches before they face a decision whether or not to use them."--$cPublisher's description. 606 $aEnvironmental geotechnology 606 $aGlobal warming 606 $aClimatic changes 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEnvironmental geotechnology. 615 0$aGlobal warming. 615 0$aClimatic changes. 676 $a551.5271 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bDivision on Earth and Life Studies, 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bBoard on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bOcean Studies Board, 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bCommittee on Geoengineering Climate, Technical Evaluation and Discussion of Impacts, 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910460901803321 996 $aClimate intervention$91983047 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03430nam 2200661Ia 450 001 9910462381003321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-283-85435-X 010 $a90-04-24321-6 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004243217 035 $a(CKB)2670000000309428 035 $a(EBL)1081548 035 $a(OCoLC)820009823 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000783456 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12260990 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000783456 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10752375 035 $a(PQKB)10753884 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1081548 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004243217 035 $a(PPN)170440125 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1081548 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10631755 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL416685 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000309428 100 $a20120924d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aHolme, Ringer & Company$b[electronic resource] $ethe rise and fall of a British enterprise in Japan (1868-1940) /$fby Brian Burke-Gaffney 210 $aLeiden ;$aBoston $cGlobal Oriental$d2012 215 $a1 online resource (256 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a90-04-23017-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aPreliminary Material -- Beginnings in England and China -- Revival of British Commercial Activity in Japan -- Establishment and Growth of Holme, Ringer and Company -- Family Affairs -- Economic Expansion -- The Dream Hotel -- Whaling and Fishing -- Wuriu Shokwai and the Shimonoseki Connection -- The Second Generation -- Roaring Twenties, Souring Thirties -- Dogs of War -- Mountains and Rivers Remain -- Bibliography -- Appendix I: Ringer Family Tree -- Appendix II: Holme, Ringer and Company (Wuriu Shokwai) Agency list for 1918 -- Index. 330 $aEstablished in the Nagasaki Foreign Settlement in 1868, Holme, Ringer andamp; Company led foreign business in western Japan up to the eve of the Second World War, engaging not only in the commodities trade and shipping and insurance agencies, but also trawl fishing and Norwegian-style whaling, hotel management, and the introduction of modern technologies such as waterworks, telephones, mechanised flour milling and large-scale petroleum storage. Gathering information from a wide range of sources, the author provides the first detailed description of these activities in Nagasaki and Shimonoseki while shedding light on the remarkable story of Frederick Ringer and his descendants, a British family that contributed to the development of modern Japan but ultimately found it impossible to stay. 606 $aTrading companies$zGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aBusiness enterprises, Foreign$zJapan$xHistory 606 $aMerchants, Foreign$zJapan$xHistory 607 $aGreat Britain$xCommerce$zJapan$xHistory 607 $aJapan$xCommerce$zGreat Britain$xHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aTrading companies$xHistory. 615 0$aBusiness enterprises, Foreign$xHistory. 615 0$aMerchants, Foreign$xHistory. 676 $a382.06 676 $a382.06552 700 $aBurke-Gaffney$b Brian$0872358 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462381003321 996 $aHolme, Ringer & Company$91947630 997 $aUNINA
