It is an iconic law, the subject of web blogs and T-shirt slogans, and is widely credited with opening the doors to the massive numbers of girls and women now participating in competitive sports. Yet few people fully understand the law?s requirements, or the extent to which it has succeeded in challenging the gender norms that have circumscribed women?s opportunities as athletes and their place in society more generally.In this first legal analysis of Title IX, Deborah L. Brake assesses the statute?s successes and failures. While the statute has created tremendous gains for female athletes, not only raising the visibility and cultural acceptance of women in sports, but also creating social bonds for women, positive body images, and leadership roles, the disparities in funding between men?s and women?s sports have remained remarkably resilient. At the same time, female athletes continue to receive less prestige and support than their male counterparts, which in turn filters into the arena of professional sports. Brake provides a richer understanding and appreciation of what Title IX has accomplished, while taking a critical look at the places where the law has fallen short. A unique contribution to the literature on Title IX, Getting in the Game fully explores the theory, policy choices, successes, and limitations of this historic law. 410 0$aCritical America. 606 $aSex discrimination in sports$xLaw and legislation$zUnited States 606 $aWomen athletes$xLegal status, laws, etc$zUnited States 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $a1972. 610 $aAmerican. 610 $aBrake. 610 $aDeborah. 610 $aTitle. 610 $aanalysis. 610 $aassesses. 610 $aathletes. 610 $achallenging. 610 $acircumscribed. 610 $aculture. 610 $adiscrimination. 610 $aeducation. 610 $aenacted. 610 $aextent. 610 $afailures. 610 $afederal. 610 $afirst. 610 $afully. 610 $agender. 610 $agenerally. 610 $ahave. 610 $ainto. 610 $alandmark. 610 $alaws. 610 $alegal. 610 $amore. 610 $anorms. 610 $aopportunities. 610 $aother. 610 $apeople. 610 $aplace. 610 $aprohibit. 610 $arequirements. 610 $asociety. 610 $astatute. 610 $astatutes. 610 $asucceeded. 610 $asuccesses. 610 $athat. 610 $atheir. 610 $athis. 610 $aunderstand. 610 $awhich. 610 $awomens. 610 $aworked. 615 0$aSex discrimination in sports$xLaw and legislation 615 0$aWomen athletes$xLegal status, laws, etc. 676 $a344.73/099 700 $aBrake$b Deborah L$01049163 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910460023703321 996 $aGetting in the game$92477937 997 $aUNINA 999 $p$100.13$u04/10/2018$5Dis LEADER 02812nam 2200625 a 450 001 9910779373103321 005 20161219111548.0 010 $a1-4833-4309-X 010 $a1-322-30601-X 010 $a1-4129-7018-0 010 $a1-4522-1345-3 035 $a(CKB)2550000000108134 035 $a(EBL)996285 035 $a(OCoLC)809771632 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000675864 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12294291 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000675864 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10671049 035 $a(PQKB)10933860 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC996285 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000063598 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000108134 100 $a20120315d2011 fy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aRethinking corrections$b[electronic resource] $erehabilitation, reentry, and reintegration /$f[editors], Lior Gideon, Hung-En Sung 210 $aLos Angeles, [Calif.] ;$aLondon $cSAGE$dc2011 215 $a1 online resource (xx, 427 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-4522-3047-1 311 $a1-4129-7019-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Brief Contents; Detailed Contents; Preface; 1 - Corrections in an Era of Reentry; 2 - Public Attitudes Toward Rehabilitation and Reintegration; 3 - Treatment of Offender Populations; 4 - Major Rehabilitative Approaches; 5 - Probation; 6 - Diversion Programs; 7 - Prison-Based Substance Abuse Programs; 8 - Prison-Based Educational and Vocational Training Programs; 9 - Community Reintegration of Violent and Sexual Offenders; 10 - Seeking Medical and Psychiatric Attention; 11 - Faith-Based Prisoner Reentry; 12 - Parole; 13 - Employment Barriers to Reintegration 327 $a14 - Barriers to Reintegration15 - Rehabilitation, Reentry, and Reintegration in Criminal Justice Education; 16 - Conclusion; Index; About the Editors 330 8 $a'Rethinking Corrections' is an edited text that will explore the challenges faced by convicted offenders over the course of rehabilitation and reintegration, and will meet the needs of upper level and graduate students as a primary text in required courses. 606 $aCriminals$xRehabilitation 606 $aCorrections 606 $aEx-convicts 606 $aCommunity-based corrections 615 0$aCriminals$xRehabilitation. 615 0$aCorrections. 615 0$aEx-convicts. 615 0$aCommunity-based corrections. 676 $a365.7 701 $aGideon$b Lior$01571413 701 $aSung$b Hung-En$f1968-$01554205 801 0$bStDuBDS 801 1$bStDuBDS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779373103321 996 $aRethinking corrections$93845805 997 $aUNINA
