By most accounts the GDR was among the most dour and disciplined of socialist states, so devoted to the rigors of Stalinist aesthetics that the notion of an East German romantic comedy was more likely to generate punch lines than lines at the box office. But in fact, as John Urang shows in Legal Tender, love was freighted as a privileged site for the negotiation and reorganization of a surprising array of issues in East German public culture between 1949 and 1989. Through close readings of a diverse selection of films and novels from the former GDR, Urang offers an eye-opening account of the ideological stakes of love stories in East German culture. Throughout its forty-year existence the East German state was plagued with an ongoing problem of legitimacy. The love story's unique and unpredictable mix of stabilizing and subversive effects gave it a peculiar status in the cultural sphere.Urang shows how love stories could mediate the problem of social stratification, providing a language with which to discuss the experience of class antagonism without undermining the Party's legitimacy. But for the Party there was danger in borrowing legitimacy from the romantic plot: the love story's destabilizing influences of desire and drive could just as easily disrupt as reconcile. A unique contribution to German studies, Legal Tender offers remarkable insights into the uses and capacities of romance in modern Western culture. 410 0$aSignale (Ithaca, N.Y.) 606 $aLove$xSocial aspects$zGermany (East) 606 $aLove in motion pictures 606 $aLove in literature 606 $aRomance films$zGermany (East)$xHistory 606 $aGerman fiction$zGermany (East)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aLove stories, German$zGermany (East)$xHistory and criticism 607 $aGermany (East)$xCivilization 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aLove$xSocial aspects 615 0$aLove in motion pictures. 615 0$aLove in literature. 615 0$aRomance films$xHistory. 615 0$aGerman fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aLove stories, German$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a843/.085090914 700 $aUrang$b John Griffith$f1975-$01023647 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910459948403321 996 $aLegal Tender$92432094 997 $aUNINA 999 $p$132.97$u06/17/2016$5Eng LEADER 03283nam 22006135 450 001 9910257399203321 005 20250731103432.0 010 $a3-540-68495-6 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-540-68495-4 035 $a(CKB)1000000000778025 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000321685 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12133493 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000321685 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10279800 035 $a(PQKB)10471400 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-540-68495-4 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3087730 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6485721 035 $a(PPN)155236458 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000778025 100 $a20121227d1997 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn|008mamaa 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aBosonization of Interacting Fermions in Arbitrary Dimensions /$fby Peter Kopietz 205 $a1st ed. 1997. 210 1$aBerlin, Heidelberg :$cSpringer Berlin Heidelberg :$cImprint: Springer,$d1997. 215 $a1 online resource (XII, 259 p. 3 illus.) 225 1 $aLecture Notes in Physics Monographs ;$v48 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a3-540-62720-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aDevelopment of the formalism -- Fermions and the Fermi surface -- Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations -- Bosonization of the Hamiltonian and the density-density correlation function -- The single-particle Green?s function -- Applications to physical systems -- Singular interactions (f q ? /q/?? ) -- Quasi-one-dimensional metals -- Electron-phonon interactions -- Fermions in a stochastic medium -- Transverse gauge fields. 330 $aThe author presents in detail a new non-perturbative approach to the fermionic many-body problem, improving the bosonization technique and generalizing it to dimensions d>1 via functional integration and Hubbard--Stratonovich transformations. In Part I he clearly illustrates the approximations and limitations inherent in higher-dimensional bosonization and derives the precise relation with diagrammatic perturbation theory. He shows how the non-linear terms in the energy dispersion can be systematically included into bosonization in arbitrary d, so that in d>1 the curvature of the Fermi surface can be taken into account. Part II gives applications to problems of physical interest, such as coupled metallic chains, electron-phonon interactions, disordered electrons, and electrons coupled to transverse gauge fields. The book addresses researchers and graduate students in theoretical condensed matter physics. 410 0$aLecture Notes in Physics Monographs ;$v48 606 $aMathematical physics 606 $aCondensed matter 606 $aMathematical Methods in Physics 606 $aCondensed Matter Physics 615 0$aMathematical physics. 615 0$aCondensed matter. 615 14$aMathematical Methods in Physics. 615 24$aCondensed Matter Physics. 676 $a530.143 700 $aKopietz$b Peter$f1961-$061187 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910257399203321 996 $aBosonization of Interacting Fermions in Arbitrary Dimensions$9375664 997 $aUNINA
