In They Never Come Back, Frans J. Schryer draws on the experiences of indigenous people from a region in the Mexican state of Guerrero to explore the impact of this transformation on the lives of migrants. When handicraft production was able to provide a viable alternative to agricultural labor, most migrants would travel to other parts of Mexico to sell their wares. Others opted to work for wages in the United States, returning to Mexico on a regular basis. This is no longer the case. At first almost everyone, including former craft vendors, headed north; however it also became more difficult to go back home and then reenter the United States. One migrant "ed by Schryer laments, "Before I was an artisan and free to travel all over Mexico to sell my crafts. Here we are all locked in a box and cannot get out." NAFTA, migrant labor legislation, and more stringent border controls have all affected migrants' home communities, their relations with employers, their livelihoods, and their identity and customs.Schryer traces the personal lives and careers of indigenous men and women on both sides of the border. He finds that the most pressing issue facing undocumented workers is not that they are unable to earn enough money but, rather, that they are living in a state of ongoing uncertainty and will never be able to achieve their full potential. Through these stories, Schryer offers a nuanced understanding of the predicaments undocumented workers face and the importance of the ongoing debate around immigration policy. 606 $aForeign workers, Mexican$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 606 $aForeign workers, Mexican$zUnited States$xEconomic conditions 606 $aUndocumented immigrants$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 606 $aUndocumented immigrants$zUnited States$xEconomic conditions 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aForeign workers, Mexican$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aForeign workers, Mexican$xEconomic conditions. 615 0$aUndocumented immigrants$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aUndocumented immigrants$xEconomic conditions. 676 $a331.6/2720973 700 $aSchryer$b Frans J.$0854670 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910459810203321 996 $aThey never come back$92443224 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05861nam 2200697 450 001 9910791320703321 005 20230607225511.0 010 $a3-11-088040-7 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110880403 035 $a(CKB)2550000001198827 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001083803 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12428127 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001083803 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11021394 035 $a(PQKB)11730858 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3045667 035 $a(DE-B1597)56035 035 $a(OCoLC)1024035696 035 $a(OCoLC)1037933824 035 $a(OCoLC)1041976925 035 $a(OCoLC)1043593649 035 $a(OCoLC)979593078 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110880403 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3045667 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10834766 035 $a(OCoLC)922948982 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001198827 100 $a20010508d2001 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aTextual responses to German unification $eprocessing historical and social change in literature and film /$fedited by Carol Anne Costabile-Heming, Rachel J. Behandelt werden literarische, autobiographische und journalistische Auseinandersetzungen sowie Essays über Film und Theater. 330 $aThe unification of the two German states changed the geo-political, economic, social, and cultural borders of Germany and Europe. This volume in three parts researches how East German and West German authors and directors reacted to these radical changes. The basis of this research are fictional, autobiographical, journalistic, and cinematic texts. The authors and directors presented in this volume not only comment on the changes which they themselves experienced but also voice their changing attitudes to their own past within the divided Germany. 606 $aGerman literature$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aMotion pictures$zGermany$xHistory 607 $aGermany$xIn literature 607 $aGermany$xHistory$yUnification, 1990 607 $aGermany$xIn motion pictures 615 0$aGerman literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xHistory. 676 $a830.9/3243 701 $aCostabile-Heming$b Carol Anne$01523301 701 $aHalverson$b Rachel J.$f1961-$01523302 701 $aFoell$b Kristie A.$f1962-$01523303 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791320703321 996 $aTextual responses to German unification$93763446 997 $aUNINA
