This provocative and revisionist biographical study of von Galen views him from a different perspective: as a complex figure who moved between dissent and complicity during the Nazi regime, opposing certain elements of National Socialism while choosing to remain silent on issues concerning discrimination, deportation, and the murder of Jews. Beth Griech-Polelle places von Galen in the context of his times, describing how the Catholic Church reacted to various Nazi policies, how the anti-Catholic legislation of the Kulturkampf shaped the repertoire of resistance tactics of northwestern German Catholics, and how theological interpretations were used to justify resistance and/or collaboration. She discloses the reasons for von Galen's public denunciation of the euthanasia project and the ramifications of his openly defiant stance. She reveals how the bishop portrayed Jews and what that depiction meant for Jews living in Nazi Germany. Finally she investigates the creation of the image of von Galen as "Grand Churchman-Resister" and discusses the implications of this for the myth of Catholic conservative "resistance" constructed in post-1945 Germany. 606 $aCardinals$zGermany$vBiography 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCardinals 676 $a282/.092 676 $aB 700 $aGriech-Polelle$b Beth A.$f1964-$01045240 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452353203321 996 $aBishop von Galen$92471346 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02018nam 2200589Ia 450 001 9910452210203321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a0-8166-5194-9 035 $a(CKB)1000000000472762 035 $a(EBL)310889 035 $a(OCoLC)476096893 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000185998 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11182810 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000185998 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10217402 035 $a(PQKB)10512461 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC310889 035 $a(OCoLC)182530489 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse39399 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL310889 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10167191 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL523150 035 $a(OCoLC)437188586 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000472762 100 $a19861007d1971 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aJohn Steinbeck$b[electronic resource] 210 $aMinneapolis, MN $cUniversity of Minnesota Press$d1971 215 $a1 online resource (49 p.) 225 1 $aUniversity of Minnesota pamphlets on American writers ;$vno. 94 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-8166-0597-1 320 $aBibliography: p. 46-48. 327 $aJohn Steinbeck; Selected Bibliography 330 $aJohn Steinbeck - American Writers 94 was first published in 1971.
