Deshalb wurde anhand von Beispielausschnitten aus einem französischen Nachrichtenmagazin der bisher vernachlässigte diskursfunktionale Aspekt der Metonymie analysiert.Zum einen kann Metonymie Diskurskontinuität (als formale und konzeptuelle sukzessive Weiterführung einer Entität im Diskurs) unterstützen: Beim Einsatz von Metonymien in Zusammenhang mit Anaphern geht es meist darum, durch die formale Fortführung eines Ausdrucks und den Rückgriff auf informationsstrukturell Gegebenes mittels der indirekten Referenz der Metonymie den Eindruck von Kontinuität herzustellen. Zum anderen können einzelne Metonymien eine der Argumentation des Diskurses entsprechende Perspektive und damit Kohärenz (als sinnvolle Verknüpfung zwischen den einzelnen im Diskurs evozierten Konzepten) erzeugen.
