Though many ancient, medieval, and early modern Europeans relied on these works to understand and explore the relationships between water and earth, particularly sixteenth-century Europeans were especially concerned with why dry land existed. This book investigates why sixteenth-century Europeans were so interested in water's failure to submerge the earth when their predecessors had not been. Analyzing biblical commentaries as well as natural philosophical, geographical, and cosmographical texts from these periods, Lindsay Starkey shows that European sea voyages to the Southern Hemisphere combined with the traditional methods of European scholarship and religious reformations led sixteenth-century Europeans to reinterpret water and earth's ontological and spatial relationships. The manner in which they did so also sheds light on how we can respond to our current water crisis before it is too late. 410 0$aEnvironmental humanities in pre-modern cultures. 606 $aDiscoveries in geography$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aReformation 606 $aReligion and science$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aWater$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 606 $aWater$xSocial aspects$zEurope 607 $aSouthern Hemisphere$xDiscovery and exploration$xHistory$y16th century 615 0$aDiscoveries in geography$xHistory 615 0$aReformation. 615 0$aReligion and science$xHistory 615 0$aWater$xReligious aspects$xChristianity. 615 0$aWater$xSocial aspects 676 $a910.9 700 $aStarkey$b Lindsay J.$01055508 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910494596803321 996 $aEncountering water in early modern Europe and beyond$92488995 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03927nam 2200709 a 450 001 9910459455703321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-282-78693-8 010 $a9786612786938 010 $a90-04-18673-5 024 7 $a10.1163/ej.9789004183889.i-176 035 $a(CKB)2670000000046089 035 $a(EBL)583685 035 $a(OCoLC)667294556 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000411680 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11250316 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000411680 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10357909 035 $a(PQKB)10117275 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC583685 035 $a(OCoLC)505913477 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004186736 035 $a(PPN)17075622X 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL583685 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10419795 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL278693 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000046089 100 $a20100212d2010 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aAmerican Israelis$b[electronic resource] $emigration, transnationalism, and diasporic identity /$fby Uzi Rebhun, Lilach Lev Ari 210 $aLeiden ;$aBoston $cBrill$d2010 215 $a1 online resource (194 p.) 225 1 $aJewish identities in a changing world ;$vv. 13 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a90-04-18388-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aMigration, transnationalism, diaspora, and research on Israelis in the United States -- Migration and settlement in the United States -- Socioeconomic acculturation and mobility -- Jewish identification and attachment to homeland -- Discussion : the multifaceted Israeli diaspora. 330 $aThis book is a scientific and comprehensive analysis of Israelis who live in the United States. Using different complementary sources of data, and through cutting-edge approaches in the social sciences, this volume examines the settlement patterns of the Israeli immigrants, their social profile, their economic achievements, their Americanization processes, as well as the nature and rhythm of their Jewish identification including changes in attachment to the homeland. The characteristics of the immigrants shed light on Israeli society. At the same time they also have important implications for the Jewish community in the host country and on Jewish continuity in America. \'...Rebhun and Lev Ari do what the title outlines. They offer nuanced and in-depth insights into transnationalism, identity and diaspora of American Jewish Israelis. Based on their theoretical and methodological expertise, the book can be recommended to scholars of these areas, regardless of its focus on Israel. For experts, American Israelis is a gem: it offers so much in terms of data and analysis that it makes for many questions, which should be addressed in further research, qualitative and quantitative alike.\' Dani Kranz, Erfurt University \'This book is central to Israeli Studies as it has comprehensive and current data on Israelis in America.\' Yoram Bitton, Columbia University This book is also available in paperback. 410 0$aJewish identities in a changing world ;$vv. 13. 606 $aIsraelis$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 606 $aJews$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 606 $aJews$zUnited States$xIdentity 607 $aIsrael$xEmigration and immigration 607 $aUnited States$xEmigration and immigration 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aIsraelis$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aJews$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aJews$xIdentity. 676 $a305.892/4073 700 $aRebhun$b Uzi$0953690 701 $aLev Ari$b Lilakh$0858519 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910459455703321 996 $aAmerican Israelis$92156393 997 $aUNINA
