Focusing on the language of parliamentarians, the author reconstructs and compares debates on the political role and representation of the people in Britain and Sweden. His analysis demonstrates not only the persistence of the classical, pejorative, conception of democracy but also the gradual re-evaluation of the notion prior to the French Revolution. The author analyses the clash between British and French conceptions of democracy as well as the first definitions of the sovereignty of Parliament as the sovereignty of the people. Furthermore, by placing parliamentary discourse in the context of public debates, he reveals the previously ignored role that parliaments played in redefining the most crucial concepts in Western political theory. 410 0$aStudies in the history of political thought ;$vv. 4. 606 $aRepresentative government and representation$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aRepresentative government and representation$zSweden$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y18th century 607 $aSweden$xPolitics and government$y18th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aRepresentative government and representation$xHistory 615 0$aRepresentative government and representation$xHistory 676 $a321.8 700 $aIhalainen$b Pasi$0867880 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910459292003321 996 $aAgents of the people$91937322 997 $aUNINA
