In this pathbreaking book, ethnographer Staci Newmahr delves into the social space of a public, pansexual SM community to understand sadomasochism from the inside out. Based on four years of in-depth and immersive participant observation, she juxtaposes her experiences in the field with the life stories of community members, providing a richly detailed portrait of SM as a social space in which experiences of ""violence"" interse 606 $aSadomasochism 606 $aSexual dominance and submission 606 $aSadomasochists$vCase studies 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSadomasochism. 615 0$aSexual dominance and submission. 615 0$aSadomasochists 676 $a306.77/5 676 $a306.775 700 $aNewmahr$b Staci$0976654 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910459006103321 996 $aPlaying on the edge$92224829 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03295nam 2200649 450 001 9910788091103321 005 20230807204418.0 010 $a90-04-28308-0 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004283084 035 $a(CKB)2670000000572490 035 $a(EBL)1823624 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001368193 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12584687 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001368193 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11449308 035 $a(PQKB)11741440 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1823624 035 $a(OCoLC)894625135$z(OCoLC)894170722 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004283084 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1823624 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10959449 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL653642 035 $a(OCoLC)894170722 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000572490 100 $a20141105h20152015 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aInsurgency and counterinsurgency in Kenya $ea social history of the Shifta Conflict, c. 1963-1968 /$fby Hannah Whittaker 210 1$aLeiden, Netherlands :$cBrill,$d2015. 210 4$d©2015 215 $a1 online resource (186 p.) 225 1 $aAfrican Social Studies Series,$x1568-1203 ;$vVolume 34 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a90-04-28267-X 311 $a1-322-22362-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aPreliminary Material -- Introduction -- The Politics of NFD Secession, 1960?63 -- The Shifta -- The Shifta Conflict, 1963?68 -- Government Responses to Conflict (1): Counterinsurgency -- Government Responses to Conflict (2): Villagization -- Aftermath -- Conclusion -- Sources -- Bibliography -- Index. 330 $aIn Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in Kenya , Hannah Whittaker offers an in-depth analysis of the Somali secessionist war in northern Kenya, 1963-68. Combining archival and oral data, the work captures the complexity of the conflict, which combined a series of local, national and regional confrontations. The conflict was not, Whittaker argues, evidence of the potency of Somali nationalism, but rather an early expression of its failure. The book also deals with the Kenyan government?s response to the conflict as part of the entrenchment of African colonial boundaries at independence. Contrary to current narratives of an increasingly borderless world, Whittaker reminds us of the violence that is produced by state-led attempts to shore up contested borderlands. This work provides vital insights into the history behind the on-going troubled relationship between the Kenyan state and its Somali minority, and between Kenya and Somalia. 410 0$aAfrican social studies series ;$vVolume 34. 606 $aSomalis$zKenya 607 $aKenya$xPolitics and government$y1963-1978 607 $aKenya$xHistory$xAutonomy and independence movements 607 $aKenya$xBoundaries$zSomalia 607 $aSomalia$xBoundaries$zKenya 615 0$aSomalis 676 $a967.6204/1 700 $aWhittaker$b Hannah$01578514 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788091103321 996 $aInsurgency and counterinsurgency in Kenya$93857919 997 $aUNINA
