Based on an analysis of over 400 standard sermon collections (postils) produced by Catholics, Lutherans, and Calvinists (1520-1620), this study offers the first comprehensive, systematic presentation of these works from a cross-confessional perspective. It lays to rest the notion that preaching was somehow distinctively Protestant while tracing the creation, production, use, and censorship of postils. These sermon collections were nothing less than the applied distillation of Christianity delivered on a regular basis by the clergy to the laity, and as such the most important vehicle for the dissemination of ideas in early modern Germany. 410 0$aStudies in medieval and Reformation traditions ;$vv. 147. 606 $aSermons$zGermany$xHistory and criticism 606 $aReformation$zGermany 607 $aGermany$xChurch history$y16th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSermons$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aReformation 676 $a251.00943/09031 700 $aFrymire$b John M$0877477 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910458877303321 996 $aThe primacy of the postils$91959406 997 $aUNINA
