Digging into the history of the bookmaking craft, the author approaches these ancient texts primarily through the lens of their artistry, while simultaneously showing them as physical objects embedded in pragmatic, economic, and social frameworks. She provides analyses of several significant Tibetan books?which usually carry Buddhist teachings?including a selection of manuscripts from Dunhuang from the 1st millennium C.E., examples of illuminated manuscripts from Western and Central Tibet dating from the 15th century, and fragments of printed Tibetan Kanjurs from as early as 1410. This detailed study of bookmaking sheds new light on the books' philosophical meanings. 410 0$aBrill's Tibetan studies library ;$vVolume 36. 606 $aBooks$zTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aBooks$xConservation and restoration$zTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aBookbinding$xTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aBook design$zTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aPrinting$zTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aPapermaking$zTibet Region$xHistory 606 $aManuscripts, Tibetan$xHistory and criticism 606 $aArchaeology and history$zTibet Region 606 $aArts, Tibetan$xHistory 607 $aTibet Region$xAntiquities 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aBooks$xHistory. 615 0$aBooks$xConservation and restoration$xHistory. 615 0$aBookbinding$xTibet Region$xHistory. 615 0$aBook design$xHistory. 615 0$aPrinting$xHistory. 615 0$aPapermaking$xHistory. 615 0$aManuscripts, Tibetan$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aArchaeology and history 615 0$aArts, Tibetan$xHistory. 676 $a002.0951/5 700 $aHelman-Waz?ny$b Agnieszka$0995021 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910458604003321 996 $aThe archaeology of Tibetan books$92279194 997 $aUNINA
