By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body. 410 0$aAmerica and the long 19th century. 606 $aAmerican fiction$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aCharacter in literature 606 $aCharacters and characteristics in literature 606 $aNational characteristics, American, in literature 606 $aCharacter$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aRhetoric$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aPolitical culture$zUnited States$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aPolitics and literature$zUnited States$xHistory$y19th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aAmerican fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aCharacter in literature. 615 0$aCharacters and characteristics in literature. 615 0$aNational characteristics, American, in literature. 615 0$aCharacter$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aRhetoric$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aPolitical culture$xHistory 615 0$aPolitics and literature$xHistory 676 $a823/.809353 700 $aSalazar$b James B$01038763 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910458315703321 996 $aBodies of reform$92460542 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03778nam2 2200625 i 450 001 VAN00125056 005 20240806100817.947 017 70$2N$a9783319915487 100 $a20191030d2018 |0itac50 ba 101 $aeng 102 $aCH 105 $a|||| ||||| 200 0 $a2. / Christian Klingenberg, Michael Westdickenberg editors 210 $aCham$cSpringer$d2018 215 $axv, 714 p.$cill.$d24 cm 410 1$1001VAN00102574$12001 $aSpringer proceedings in mathematics & statistics$1210 $aBerlin [etc.]$cSpringer$d2012-$v237 461 1$1001VAN00125057$12001 $aTheory, Numerics and Applications of Hyperbolic Problems$eAachen, Germany, August 2016$fChristian Klingenberg, Michael Westdickenberg editors$1210 $aCham$cSpringer$d2018$1215 $avolumi$cill.$d24 cm$v2 500 1$3VAN00236570$aTheory, Numerics and Applications of Hyperbolic Problems II$92205553 606 $a35Lxx$xHyperbolic equations and hyperbolic systems [MSC 2020]$3VANC022749$2MF 606 $a35M10$xPDEs of mixed type [MSC 2020]$3VANC028361$2MF 606 $a35Qxx$xPartial differential equations of mathematical physics and other areas of application [MSC 2020]$3VANC022881$2MF 606 $a35R35$xFree boundary problems for PDEs [MSC 2020]$3VANC020050$2MF 606 $a65Mxx$xNumerical methods for partial differential equations, initial value and time-dependent initial-boundary value problems [MSC 2020]$3VANC020831$2MF 606 $a65Nxx$xNumerical methods for partial differential equations, boundary value problems [MSC 2020]$3VANC020832$2MF 606 $a65Txx$xNumerical methods in Fourier analysis [MSC 2020]$3VANC023238$2MF 606 $a65Yxx$xComputer aspects of numerical algorithms [MSC 2020]$3VANC035150$2MF 606 $a65Zxx$xApplications to the sciences [MSC 2020]$3VANC021520$2MF 606 $a74Bxx$xElastic materials [MSC 2020]$3VANC023433$2MF 606 $a74Jxx$xWaves in solid mechanics [MSC 2020]$3VANC023439$2MF 606 $a76Lxx$xShock waves and blast waves in fluid mechanics [MSC 2020]$3VANC023551$2MF 606 $a76Rxx$xDiffusion and convection [MSC 2020]$3VANC034146$2MF 606 $a76Txx$xMultiphase and multicomponent flows [MSC 2020]$3VANC029098$2MF 606 $a80Axx$xThermodynamics and heat transfer [MSC 2020]$3VANC029102$2MF 606 $a80Mxx$xBasic methods in thermodynamics and heat transfer [MSC 2020]$3VANC034040$2MF 606 $a83C55$xMacroscopic interaction of the gravitational field with matter (hydrodynamics, etc.) [MSC 2020]$3VANC023436$2MF 606 $a83Fxx$xCosmology [MSC 2020]$3VANC023580$2MF 610 $aHyperbolic conservation laws$9KW:K 610 $aKinetic equations$9KW:K 610 $aMulti-phase Flow$9KW:K 610 $aNavier-Stokes equations$9KW:K 610 $aNon-linear Conservation$9KW:K 610 $aPartial Differential Equations$9KW:K 620 $aCH$dCham$3VANL001889 702 1$aKlingenberg$bChristian$3VANV096511 702 1$aWestdickenberg$bMichael$3VANV096512 712 12$aInternational Conference on Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics, and Applications$d16.$f2016$eAachen, Germany$3VANV096513 712 $aSpringer $3VANV108073$4650 801 $aIT$bSOL$c20250314$gRICA 856 4 $uhttp://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-91548-7$zE-book ?
