Silvia Domínguez argues that these immigrant women parlay social ties that provide support and leverage to develop networks and achieve social positioning to get ahead. Through a rich ethnographic account and in-depth interviews, the strong voices of these women demonstratehow they successfully negotiate the world and achieve social mobility through their own individual agency, skillfullynavigating both constraints and opportunities.Domínguez makes it clear that many immigrant women are able to develop the social support needed for a rich social life, and leverage ties that open options for them to develop their social and human capital. However, she also shows that factors such as neighborhood and domestic violence and the unavailability of social services leave many women without the ability to strategize towards social mobility. Ultimately, Domínguez makes important local and international policy recommendations on issue ranging from public housing to world labor visas, demonstrating how policy can help to improve the lives of these and other low-income people. 606 $aSocial mobility$zUnited States 606 $aImmigrants$xSocial networks$zUnited States 606 $aAcculturation$zUnited States 606 $aPolitical refugees$zChile 606 $aChileans$zUnited States 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSocial mobility 615 0$aImmigrants$xSocial networks 615 0$aAcculturation 615 0$aPolitical refugees 615 0$aChileans 676 $a305.5/130869120973 700 $aDomi?nguez$b Silvia$f1961-$01039416 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910458214203321 996 $aGetting ahead$92461625 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04207 am 22007933u 450 001 9910563076503321 005 20230621140413.0 010 $a9780708320341 035 $a(CKB)3450000000003019 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000941797 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12471918 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000941797 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10971260 035 $a(PQKB)10321738 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/30937 035 $a(EXLCZ)993450000000003019 100 $a20160829d2008 fy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurm|#---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rda carrier 200 10$aAncrene Wisse and vernacular spirit $efrom pastoral literature to vernacular spirituality /$fCate Gunn 210 $aCardiff$cUniversity of Wales Press$d2007 210 31$a[Cardiff, Wales] :$cUniversity of Wales Press,$d2008 210 4$a©2008 215 $a1 online resource (vii, 243 pages) $cdigital, PDF file(s) 225 1 $aReligion and Culture in the Middle Ages 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a0708320341 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aIntroduction --Part I. This book offers a fresh contextualisation which engages with the history of lay piety and vernacular spirituality in the Middle Ages. This book is innovative in that it provides an introduction to "Ancrene Wisse", one of the most important works in English of the thirteenth century. It offers a new contextualisation which engages with the history of lay piety and vernacular spirituality in the Middle Ages, thus extending analysis of the book beyond its original purpose as a guide for anchoresses. The placing of "Ancrene Wisse" within this context also allows comparisons to be made with other literature for semi-regular women, such as sermons preached to beguines - semi-religious women who formed communities in the Low Countries and France in the High Middle Ages. 410 0$aReligion and Culture in the Middle Ages (University of Wales Press). 606 $aDevotional literature, English (Middle)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish literature$yMiddle English, 1100-1500$xHistory and criticism 606 $aNuns$xReligious life 606 $aNuns$xBooks and reading$zEngland$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 606 $aEnglish$2HILCC 606 $aLanguages & Literatures$2HILCC 606 $aEnglish Literature$2HILCC 610 $acultuur 610 $amiddle ages 610 $aculture 610 $areligie 610 $areligion 610 $amiddeleeuwen 610 $aAnchorite 610 $aAncrene Wisse 610 $aBeguines and Beghards 610 $aGod 610 $aLaity 610 $aSpirituality 615 0$aDevotional literature, English (Middle)$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aNuns$xReligious life. 615 0$aNuns$xBooks and reading$xHistory 615 0$aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity. 615 7$aEnglish 615 7$aLanguages & Literatures 615 7$aEnglish Literature 676 $a255.901 700 $aGunn$b Cate$0904312 801 0$bPQKB 801 2$bUkMaJRU 912 $a9910563076503321 996 $aAncrene Wisse and vernacular spirit$92021993 997 $aUNINA
