In response to such anxieties a distinct genre of religious apologetics emerged in England between 1580 and 1720. By examining the form and the content of the confutation of atheism, Anti-Atheism in Early Modern England demonstrates the prevalence of patterned assumptions and arguments about who an atheist was and what an atheist was supposed to believe, outlines and analyzes the major arguments against atheists, and traces the important changes and challenges to this apologetic discourse in the early Enlightenment. 410 0$aStudies in the history of Christian traditions ;$vVolume 176. 606 $aApologetics$zEngland$xHistory 606 $aAtheism$zEngland$xHistory 606 $aChristianity and atheism 607 $aEngland$xChurch history 615 0$aApologetics$xHistory. 615 0$aAtheism$xHistory. 615 0$aChristianity and atheism. 676 $a211.80942 700 $aSheppard$b Kenneth$01535400 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797266803321 996 $aAnti-atheism in early modern England 1580-1720$93783568 997 $aUNINA
