The analysis results in eight fields of tension that occur in the practical applications of this theory. The past and future of government supervision by the IGZ were considered as one of the actors in the complex management relationships in health care. Themes that are addressed in the development of supervision are: the place and function of supervision in health care, the legal basis, the international dimension of supervision and the influence of market forces and patient safety on supervision. The choices made in the practice of supervision within the areas of tension and the way in which they work have a major influence on the reputation of the inspection. The sector sketch is concluded with a future agenda, in which the positioning of the IGZ and innovation of supervision are decisive for sustainable and dynamic government supervision of health care.
