Recent research, however, has shown the complexity of genres like autobiographies, diaries and letters. Building on critical and historical research into autobiographical writing, this book describes epistolary practices of the Dutch elite in the period 1770-1850. Analysing how cultural ideals of sincerity, individuality and naturalness influenced the style and contents of letters, the book also addresses the functions of letter writing in family life, like the formation of an adolescent identity and the relationship between parents and children. Correspondence was a vital means by which class and gender identities were performed and the appropriate emotions were shaped. 410 0$aEgodocuments and history series ;$vv. 4. 606 $aElite (Social sciences)$zNetherlands$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aElite (Social sciences)$zNetherlands$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aLetter writing, Dutch$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aLetter writing, Dutch$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aNetherlands$xSocial life and customs$y18th century 607 $aNetherlands$xSocial life and customs$y19th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aElite (Social sciences)$xHistory 615 0$aElite (Social sciences)$xHistory 615 0$aLetter writing, Dutch$xHistory 615 0$aLetter writing, Dutch$xHistory 676 $a306.44086/210949209033 700 $aRuberg$b Willemijn$f1975-$0919416 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457807403321 996 $aConventional correspondence$92062257 997 $aUNINA
