Both now declare their true identities, yet raise hostility. The Penitentes are a lay Catholic brotherhood that practices bloody rites of self-flagellation and crucifixion, but claim this is a misrepresentation and that they are a community and a charitable organization. Marranos, an ambiguous and complicated population of Sephardic descendants, claim to be anousim. Both peoples have a complex, shared history. This book disentangles the web, redefines the terms, and creates new contexts in which these groups are viewed with respect and sympathy without idealizing or slandering them. Simms uses rabbinics, literary analyses, psychohistory, and cultural anthropology to consolidate a history of mentalities. 410 0$aJudaism and Jewish life. 606 $aCrypto-Jews$zSouthwest, New$xHistory 606 $aJews$zSouthwest, New$xHistory 606 $aCrypto-Jews$xReligious life$zSouthwest, New 606 $aCrypto-Jews$zSouthwest, New$xSocial life and customs 607 $aSouthwest, New$xReligious life and customs 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCrypto-Jews$xHistory. 615 0$aJews$xHistory. 615 0$aCrypto-Jews$xReligious life 615 0$aCrypto-Jews$xSocial life and customs. 676 $a979/.004924 700 $aSimms$b Norman Toby$0853731 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457802303321 996 $aMarranos on the moradas$92471608 997 $aUNINA
